2020 off-season thread

apparently there are rumors that epstein might be moving on? that would be interesting and might mean the end of the core (that only seemed to coalesce into its potential for like 2 years)

declined lester's option but picked up rizzo's (which i'm happy about, he's one of my favorite players on the team)

Theo officially resigned and replaced by Hoyer. Guess I'm not totally surprised.

Glad Rizzo was picked up. Will miss Lester as really enjoyed all he did for the team.

Going to be a maddening offseason, IMO.

on to a new era i suppose, or a transition period perhaps depending on how much of the core is retained

Schwarber non tendered. Kind of puzzling after years of not moving him for pitching help as clear that ( no matter how much I love him) he was not an everyday player.

the other big names were tendered (bryant, baez, contreas). always felt like they could never find a spot for schwarber, would have been nice to try and get something for him a few years ago but oh well

If it's about saving money they they need to move Hayward, sure he's a great fielder but he doesn't hit for the power you expect from a right fielder and he hasn't hit for average, he doesn't drive in that many runs but he's soaking up a lot more money than he's worth.

I might be able to live with them dropping Schwarber but they didn't get anything for him, he wasn't going to get that much money. Whoever they bring in to repIace Schwaber it better be a 300 hitter for the top of the lineup because they're going to hit fewer home runs so they better get runners on base when they do come. If they trade Bryant then where's the power going to come from?

Not impressed by Darvish trade. Have a feeling Bryant will be traded for less than market value.

i guess we sold high on yu. saving money the goal here?

is davies or any of the prospects good/going to be good? the kids all look a ways off based on how young they are

is hendricks our only starter left? lester, yu, quintana all gone

our starters have been pretty good for a while and now we're almost completely rebooting

Yes the goal was sell high, save a ton of money and add some young players in A or AA that allow the best kids at those levels to get a look in spring training for the roster. Darvish for as great as he was this past year, contributed nothing for two years so why gamble that his next two high priced seasons will be great when they could be bust just as easily.

Hendricks is your ACE, Davies slots in #2, Alec Mills, Tyler Chatwood seemed to have found his way back and they had several live young arms for the 5 spot like Alzolay.

I'm glad they gave up Caratini and not Contreras who is a better all around player

What looks empty is the outfield, Happ and Hayward coming back and they added Ervin. They could make a major upgrade if they could find a way to trade Hayward

I think I look at selling high as not just trading following 1.5 good seasons, but getting some value. I think any team would trade 4 players in there top 11-20 (3 of which havent played in pro ball) 4 or more years away from majors for a guy who finished 2nd in Cy Young.

I get why but I'd have really preferred no prospects and including Hayward as well. That seems to me way more defensible and likely better short and long term. I hope I am wrong and maybe getting as much young talent regardless of timeline is better play. I just dont like it at face value and think its not the last major move that is going to puzzle me.

And we included useful and cost controlled Caratini.

And we ate some of Yu's salary.

catcher seems like a position where it can be difficult to find some decent guys. i thought we had that spot covered for a while because contreras is good and caratini has been a solid backup. hopefully we can find another contributor back there

Thinking we'll likely see some Amaya this season but not surprised if we go for a cheap vet for depth.

looks like the nl central is going to be in for a rough year, which is pretty uninspiring
