Calderon's stats when he was the main PG last year

Post#1 » by supersub15 » Mon Jul 14, 2008 5:32 pm

I wanted to get an idea of what to expect from Calderon next season in terms of stats (which would hopefully translate into wins for the team), and the best way - I think - was to isolate his stats as a starting PG when TJ was completely out of the picture (i.e. injured). In that regard, Calderon played 30 games as the main PG of the team and was backed up by Juan Dixon and/or Darrick Martin in limited minutes.

Calderon's stats in the 30 games in which TJ Ford was completely out:

37 mpg, 14.8 ppg, 10.2 apg, 1.73 tov
0.543 FG%, 0.449 3FG%, 0.910 FT%

Obviously, there is no guarantee that he can repeat those numbers, especially that we have a second option on offense now, but the sample size is fair enough to suggest that he can at least keep the assists up, but probably not the points.

Personally, I don't care about his points, because if he's dishing 10 assists per game, then the whole team is benefitting.

Warning: Now a word of caution. I thought long and hard about posting this, because I'm dreading a Ford vs. Calderon all-out war. So, please, let's discuss rationally - without baiting or riling others - the merits of these stats, without including TJ Ford in this discussion. These are Calderon's stats, and the discussion pertains to his numbers next year. There is absolutely zero relevance to TJ Ford in the discussion.

I think he will repeat and even surpass those numbers. We can assume he will dish more dimes because of JO's arrival. And lets not forget he did not take too many shots either, if he increases his FGA per game we can expect maybe 16 PPG?

that 5.9:1 A:T ratio is all kinds of (Please Use More Appropriate Word). so are his shooting percentages. it's quite possible that his efficiency actually goes up this season.

I'm guessing that his scoring goes up and his assists go down as a result of us playing through the post more.

The great part is that we had the hardest strength of schedule during that time of year as well yet he put up very efficient numbers. Calderon not being aggressive enough was an issue last year, but with JO on board it might not be such a problem this year, though I'd still like to see him take that step forward.

Great stats.

I was thinking about this the other day. His assist stats this year are going to improve significantly with two bigs to toss the ball too. It's almost scary to see how many he can average. I think he's going to be top three in the league.

If so, we might very well have three All stars on his team next year.

Knock on wood. Please dear God knock on wood.

I'm guessing that his minutes are down slightly - we were pushing him a bit because we felt like we were just making do until TJ got back and he could pull back a bit.
Ukic will need to play more than the garbage we had in 3rd position last year.

I think his assists will go down a bit per minute too, since he'll get less assists on JO makes than he did with Rasho just because of style.

But his 3PA will go up, and if he hits them at the same clip, his scoring avg could stay the same in smaller minutes.

Although I love Calderon I always had some reservations about his defense. Is there any way to get some defensive stats for those 30 games?

Awesome offensive stats though. If Caldy can maintain that sort of performance over the entire season that would put him in top5 PG contention.

That is very good for 30 games but I think we should limit his minutes to 32-34 during the regular season so he won't be dead tired come playoff time. If he can put up 13 and 9 in 33 minutes I will be satisfied. Anything more is just the icing on the cake.

We won also won against middling teams, like Portland, Washington, Indiana, etc.

Losses against quality teams: Clevaland, Boston, Houston, Phoenix, Detroit (2), LA Lakers

I expect the stats to be similar. When you look at his stats for the past 2 seasons, it's been pretty similar. High assists, high FG%. The one thing he improved on was his 3 point shot, which he shoot over 40% this season. And not to mention his insanely low turnover numbers.

His assists might not necessarily go up. Calderon doesn't exactly get his teammates tons of easy baskets right under the basket. He likes pick and rolls, as well as swinging it on the perimeter. JO is the type of player to benefit from getting the ball close to the basket, so hopefully we see more of that. If not, we'll probably be seeing JO back down players in the post more often than not, which isn't an easy way to rack up assists.

This stuff has actually been discussed to death but it always happened in Ford/Jose threads. Nothing really new here.

Of those 30 games, he only played 7 back-to-backs (small sample size):
35 mpg, 16.4 ppg, 10.4 apg, 1.71 tov
0.552 FG%, 0.450 3FG%, 1.000 FT%

I think his points and assist number will be in the same range as the time starting. As TheDoctor said Roko Ukic is better than 2 of the garbage backup man we had you could maybe see 32 minutes but same stats. I expect:
13 PPG
10 APG
2 RPG

Nice. We beat some pretty good defenses with him. Considering his numbers, chances are the losses were the result of our terrible defense, which should be better this year with JO.
