Bengals announce cuts, practice squad

From the always brilliant blog Cincy Jungle:

Cincinnati Bengals
Bengals make final cuts

By C. Trent Rosecrans, CNATI.com Posted September 5, 2009 2:46 PM ET

The Bengals made their final cuts today.

Injured reserve
WR Antonio Chatman

Three veterans not subeject to waivers, releasing them to free agency:
LB Darryl Blackstock
LB Jim Maxwell
DT Langston Moore

Waived 18
S Marvin White
G Andrew Crummey
S Corey Lynch
G Jason Shirley
DE Chris Harrington
HB James Johnson
TE Kolomona Kapanui
WR Maurice Purify
WR Freddie Brown
TE Darius Hill
DT Ventrell Jenkins
CB Rico Murray
OT Augustus Parrish
FB Chris Pressley
LB Dan Skuta
K Sam Swank
FB Fui Vakapuna

The practice squad has also been named; they are as follows:

* TE Darius Hill
* HB James Johnson
* S Corey Lynch
* DT Clinton McDonald
* FB Chris Pressley
* WR Maurice Purify
* OG Jason Shirley
* LB Dan Skuta

First of all, congratulations to Chris Pressley. For all the screen time he ended up getting on Hard Knocks, he played his way into a spot. The practice squad is not glamorous but it's a job in the NFL.

The only loss that's really going to hurt is Marvin White, who was claimed by the Dallas Cowboys. Cincinnati is also going with four running backs this year (Benson, Scott, Dorsey and Leonard) which is probably for the best given the unit's lack of proven experience.

The two players Cincy absolutely had to keep were Lynch and Shirley, who showed too much potential to be let go. (Shirley, in particular, appears to have taken to his switch the offensive line. He is a nasty human being to come up against.) Icness will no doubt be happy that ex-Grand Valley State LB Dan Skuta has made the squad, and the rest of the players I have no real problem with.

Notables who made the roster:

-WR Quan Cosby
-TE J.P. Foschi (literally didn't know his name before I just read it)
-WR Jerome Simpson (remember, he was in grave danger of being cut)
-DE Frostee Rucker (currently taking up a roster spot at this point)
-LB Abdul Hodge (Iowa fans realize how talented he is, but Cincy took six linebackers)
-CB Morgan Trent
-S Tom Nelson (Nice horse, dude. Nice horse indeed)
-S Roy Williams (still a huge p***y)

Additionally, FB Fui Vakapuna (a 7th-round draft pick) was signed to the Arizona Cardinals' practice squad. The team must have a decent bit of faith in Pressley to keep him where he is.

Not many surprises in the cuts. Is Fui and Freddie Brown are the draftpicks that we cut?

Anyways, I'm excited for this season. I think hard knocks is giving me false confidence in this group of guys, but it should be a good ride.
