Rumor: Bulls Looking at Martell Webster

Post#1 » by frosty23 » Tue Dec 28, 2010 6:18 pm

Someone I know with close contact to the Bulls organization has informed me that along with Stephen Jackson, OJ Mayo and JR Smith, the Bulls are now looking at Martell Webster as well to solve their shooting guard woes. He said it is unclear whether Taj Gibson would be included in such a deal, but negotians between the Bulls and Timbersolves are ongoing.

Martell Webster is terrible and no way would the Bulls give up Taj for him, so I am calling shens on this.

Why would they want Taj?? He doesn't play PG.

I'd take Webster over JJ considering Webster might actually do more then just get courtside seats, but I don't think JJ would be a very good PG either.

Would CJ and Lucas for Webster work?

I would normally call BS...
BUT....Martell Webster has a "Bulls style" contract.

Guranteed this year and next year, but only partially guaranteed for 2012-13. $600,000 if waived before 7/1/12.

So...this unconfirmed rumor does make some sense....

And NO to Taj....

Webster is talented offensively but doesn't play defense at all, and he's really more of a 3 than a 2. Plus we don't have the contracts. Unless we were to do something like Watson, Bogans & filler for Webster and Telfair, which would suck for Minny. I don't buy it.

Well, we seem to requiring about everyone who fits the profile. I've got to give Gar credit. He senses the need, and he's doing the work.

Martell was injured at the beginning of the year. In October, he had surgery to remove a herniated disc in his back. Since he came back (he's played 10 games for the TWolves), his stats are pretty good:

28 minutes
13.8ppg
48% from the field
39% from 3
3.6 rebounds per

I can imagine he might be available in a trade because the TWolves have cemented their starting lineup with Love at the 4, Beasley at the 3, and Wes Johnson at the 2. Johnson is similar in size to Webster as a 6' 7" small forward who can play the 2 as well. Meanwhile, they've also got Corey Brewer, still on his rookie deal but playing less and Wayne Ellington. They have enough depth at swingman that they could trade Webster.

Again, he's more of a natural 3 than a 2, much like Brewer and Corver. Webster actually is not considered a great athlete or defender. He's a shooter with good size though. I want more, but I think we could use one more shooter, assuming the price was low.

You beat me to a bunch of this.

Plus, the TWolves have so many young players that I don't think they need another draft pick.

I neglected to add:
It would have to be something like CJ and Bogans without us taking back salary. And then we would have to find a backup PG. Just doesn't make sense.

EDIT: Unless maybe we're taking back the rights to Ricky Rubio. Anyone hear a rumor about that?

I'd take Webster for scraps, but not much more than that. He can hit 3s when healthy, but isn't a particularly good all-around player. Can't remember how he is on defense, and haven't really seen him do much on offense other than shoot jumpers.

But still, he'd be a considerable upgrade over Bogans if he can stay healthy.

Since Webster is nobody, its an even trade.

Seriously though, he's been producing for Minny this year in the 8 games he's played.

Since this has James Johnson written all over it, and we wouldn't give up anything of actual value, I'm all about it.

We have Martell Webster. He's called Kyle Korver here, and we shall love him and squeeze him and call him Ashton.

Good point on the "more of a 3 than a 2" part. He's not as athletic as he was billed as being when he was coming out of high school or early in his career. He's not a total dud in that sense, but not really quick enough to play big minutes at the 2. Which he'd have to do here as long as Deng is on the team.

Clear to say none of you guys actually know who Martell Webster is?

He's a good perimeter shooter, a good defender, has great size, and is athletic. The knock on him is if he has the ability to put the ball on the floor, which he showed he could do during the preseason before the injury.

Kahn is a huge fan of Webster, I doubt he'd just give him away for peanuts.

I know exactly who Martell Webster is. A slow-footed jumpshooter whose athleticism was always overstated. His ballhandling is second to all, and his defense being good is a new revelation held among Wolves fans, for whom he has played 8 regular season games. I simply disagree with their evaluation.
