2011/12 Draft Prospects

Post#1 » by ajaX82 » Tue Sep 13, 2011 3:21 am

Well with College Football back in the swing and the NFL started, guess we can start to talk draft. I know there won't be much early, but as the season rolls on and we get a better idea of our draft slot and needs (o-line, o-line, o-line), it should pick up

Remember, lets keep this focused on this years picks, not Stafford or something else off-topic

cheers

OT and all non-DT defensive positions; also not DE unless we are getting the #1 prospect

I think unless a stud CB falls to us, we need to focus on shoring up the O-line. We really could use depth across the entire line (OT, OG, and C).

Since I think the Lions will be picking late in the draft, I'm thinking we go OT or OG, with my preference leaning towards a tackle.

One guy I like for how the Lions would (hopefully) use him is Kelechi Osemele, OL, Iowa State. He's 6'6" about 345, not fat at all and plays nasty. He is primarily a LT for them but in the NFL he projects as either a RT or G because his feet aren't real quick and he tends to get straight up in his stance. When he focuses on his technique he's like a younger Flozell Adams.

Good interview with him, though the interviewer needs a new shirt:
http://espn.go.com/blog/big12/post/_/id ... hi-osemele

It's way too early to project yet but he figures to wind up in the 25-45 overall range.

Totally agree that the OL has to be top priority. Eventual starters at left tackle and center both must come from this draft.

Is it possible to think we use out first 3 picks on O-linemen? Something like:

1) OG/T Osemele (Iowa State)

2) OT Reiff (Iowa)

3) C Konz (Wisconsin)

4-7 = Best athletes available

I think two linemen need to come in the first four rounds. I would like to add a safety with cover skills and an outside linebacker with the other two. I do really want OL in the first round though, the rest can be based on the board as it falls.

Early impressions:
Decent year for OL. Top-end isn't great but there's a lot of guys in the 20-50 overall range, sort of like this year.

Great year for QBs, probably the best in the 8 years I've been in the business. Luck is better than anyone I've scouted, Jones is very good, Cousins is solid, Robert Griffin looks promising, Ryan Tannehill looks great, Barkley is Kyle Orton II and that has value, Lindley has potential. I know some people are high on Kellen Moore but I am not. Brandon Weeden is overaged but looks legit, Nick Foles has his assets. Even the guy from Northern Illinois deserves a long look in the 2nd/3rd round if he continues to play well.

WR is top-heavy and very similar to this year, where there are two (Blackmon and Jeffery) way up and then a group (Floyd, Fuller, Childs, Broyles, Sanu) that will sort out as it plays out. Blackmon is better than Julio Jones at the same point.

OLB is a question right now because the position is different in college than it is in the NFL. Bruce Irvin and Zack Brown would fit in the Lions range in the 1st if they choose.

I like the corner group more than most people do, but that is a position where all the top talent is juniors or sophmores and you don't know who is coming out until January.

I don't see a first round safety even if the top juniors declare. Mark Barron has some ability but Bama hides him quite a bit. I just watched tape of a guy from Arkansas State named Kelcie McCray that looks like a 3rd/4th rounder that would fit nicely in Detroit; speedy, good awareness, not afraid to tackle, not stiff in coverage. A little on the skinny side and the level of competition isn't great.

I predict only 1 Tackle in the first 4 rounds and no other OL, it will be 3 defensive players for sure. The only question is will it be 4 defensive players instead of 3.

Also, don't rule out a FA signing for an OT or a pre-draft trade... or Backus being extended!

My draft scoping will be easy, I will be honing in on the 5 best LTs, the 1-2 best DEs, and the top 5 LBs and DBs, that will be the primary meat of the value of our best potentials. A nice 15-20 man hotlist to aim for 2 and hope to trade around to get 3-4 of them.

I think Backus will get extended, probably 2 years with the money totally up front so they can ditch him if need be.

I wouldn't mind a second-tier free agent a la Sims, he's been fine. Teams very seldom let tackles that can actually play ever hit the market. Philly thought they got a steal with Ryan Harris and then they learned why Denver let him walk.

Yeah, I think the 2013 draft is going to be our big OL draft. If we go 4 defensive players in 2012, then we could go 3 OL picks in the top 3 in 2013. If we go 3 defensive players, then we go 2/3 in 2013 at OL.

So no matter what happens, I foresee in 2013 that we definitely pick 1 G and 1 C in the first 3 rounds, with a possible Tackle accounting for the 3rd pick depending on if we take one in 2012.

What team will get Andrew Luck?

Here's 5 teams that lost in week 1 that could maybe use a QB and lose lots more games to get either #1 or a trade for #1:

Top 5 most likely?:

Seattle
Miami
KC
Cleveland
Denver

Unless something wild happens and Dallas or NYG or MIN go after him, I think his team is on that list. Have a few teams win a game or two and we will find out who his team will be really soon!

I'd add indianapolis to that list, indy is at best a 3 win team without Manning.
Edit: Duh, Washington is 2-0

I agree we need a better offensive line after watching the minn game.i would use 2 of the first 3 pick on the offensive line which is a big weakness of the lions.

I still think this might be our best plan of action for next season's draft. Whatever depth we don't get in rounds 4-7, we can pick up with cheap free agents.

We have the franchise QB and a pretty good 1-2 punch at RB with Best and LeShore. Now we need to make sure we can protect them.....

I think we should skip any o line picks, as they say "what doesn't kill you makes you stronger." We almost got Stafford killed, and look at him now lol

Now, as in, on his way to nearly getting killed again?

I was joking yo, but he is playing well after being broken for most of 2 seasons, can't argue with results

I see the Lions drafting a WR with their first pick of the draft they need to replace Nate burleson.
This is a no brainer offensive line will have to wait till the 2-3 rounds.
