10lbs overweight is pushing being out of shape. Guy can lose that weight in a month of training camp.
CC, Wells were always over weight.

Re: official Spring Training Thread
Weight IS worrisome because velocity drops as the season progresses a lot sooner due to weight...and you saw this with CC's conditioning as Aug-Sept rolled around in 2010. Wells back spasms killed the Yanks 2003 chances.
FAT men don't last long in this league without going under the knife. It's RARE if they do and you can see why the Yankees are constantly monitoring CC's weight because that contract he carries is killer.
So yes, a young kid like Pineda has NO EXCUSES for coming in 10 lbs overweight especially since he stunk it up during the second half of the season and his velocity dropped.
That's why I have NO PROBLEMS slowly integrating him into the rotation and letting Hughes and Garcia pitch ahead of him until he gets into shape, builds back up his velocity but more importantly location and learning another pitch so he's not a chucker.

I still have no faith in Hughes as a starter, no matter how great shape he came in.
I hope he proves me wrong.

His lose of velocity last year is still unexplained and he never really regained it as the season went on. He is going to have to come out strong and prove he is healthy and last year was a fluke.

What's worrying is his complete inability to manage games. Supposedly Pineda's changeup is already more than any secondary stuff Hughes has. Even if his injuries are behind him and his velocity returns, Hughes might be more suited as a reliever unless he proves he can pitch smarter.

Pineda is a BEAST and under team control for a while. Only a few real holes in his game but easily correctable.
- Lefties give him trouble
- His offspeed (change) is pretty average
- Benefited in a real pitchers park in Seattle
- Possible red flags injury wise (almost made Verducci's list, but didn't quite)
Other than that, ace potential. I had MLB Extra Innings last season and watched quite a few of his starts, I was impressed with how polished he was at such a young age.

Very curious to see how Brett Marshall looks...don't expect him to make the roster but he has tremendous upside.

Hughes reached his pitch count limit...I really think his problem is mental.
Kuroda wasn't sharp...Nova was hammered.
but once AGAIN, it's JUST Spring training...so wash all it off when it's time.
Right now, Freddy Garcia is looking like the #2.

Pineda didn't look particularly sharp but he's mixing that pitch so he's not always having to dial up 95mph on the gun.

Re: official Spring Training Thread
Hey Mo didn't like at all how Pettitte, Posada, and Jeter were treated by the organization when it came to the re-ups. He didn't say anything but Red Sox were talking to him...which is something you DIDN'T hear about in the past.
What's going to be hard to bite...Mo has 2 maybe 3 great seasons left but he realizes the organization motto is, "Win a World Series BUT..." and not George's at any cost.
Rivera is Batman...let the battle for the Cowl begin: Hughes, Joba, Robertson, Soriano, etc...

Kuroda looked alright against the Astros...3 innings 2 hits, 2Ks.
Right now, I am most concerned with Hughes & Nova's progress. BOTH those guys will be relied on A LOT MORE than Pineda or Kuroda.
