Turnover_21 wrote:So how about Beans and Klay for #18 pick, Darko and Miller. Darko is 5.2 mil next season and 1.7 mil the following year, Miller is non-guaranteed so you save about 11 mil on Beans and you have 2 draft picks to replace Klay.

Klay is highly valued by the Warriors FO who expect him to be their long term starting shooting guard. Giving up Klay just to move the last two years of Biedrins is totally DOA for the Warriors. If the Golden State FO really wants Biedrins gone they would buy him out rather than give up an asset like Klay Thompson because the Warriors actually expect to be a playoff team next season.

Of course buying out Biedrins doesn't make sense because it doesn't affect the cap. And we don't have such a great 12th man that couldn't make room for a replacement.

It could effect the cap if he agreed to spread the payments out or agreed to a lesser buyout deal.... Didn't the new CBA make it more friendly for spreading out money longer term?

That's the "stretch clause." I believe you can only do that with contracts that were signed after the new CBA.

But I think buyouts at less than full dollar apply regardless, even if they can't be stretched. In other words, if you can buy him out at 60 cents on the dollar, the cap hit goes down to that amount.

Curry/Jefferson for Rondo and then pray for a top 2 pick and draft MKG. Trade Wright for a future 2nd round pick. Re-sign Rush/McGuire.

Rondo/Jenkins
Klay/Rush
MKG/McGuire
Lee/Robinson
Bogut/Tyler/Biedrins

Use whatever is left of the MLE after signing McGuire to get a veteran.

I don't think this is true. I believe the "stretch" clause was only applicable if it was used in conjunction with amnesty. Which as you know we already blew our wad.

My understanding was that the stretch clause was for waiving contracts PRE-new CBA and was entirely separate from the amnesty... I'll look around real quick

EDIT: I was wrong, POST-CBA

http://espn.go.com/nba/story/_/page/CBA ... s-last-one

Stretch provision

• 2005 CBA: By mutual agreement, teams can alter the payment schedule to waived players. The remaining guaranteed salary is applied to the team's salary cap across the remaining years of the player's contract.

• 2011 CBA: The player's remaining salary and his cap hit may be stretched across twice the number of seasons remaining on the contract, plus one (for example, the salary and cap hit for a player waived with two seasons remaining may be stretched across five seasons). This is entirely at the team's discretion, but it applies only to contracts signed under the 2011 CBA.

• Who benefits? Teams with bad contracts. For example, if a team has an underperforming player with one season remaining at $12 million, the team can waive him and stretch his salary across three seasons at $4 million per season. This will help with cash flow and provide $8 million in cap relief for the current season.

EvanZ, unless they specifically changed how buyouts work under the new CBA, it's as I described. But maybe they changed it. This is not an amnesty I'm talking about - buyouts are different.

I believe floppy is right, at least from what I read of the pre-lockout CBA. Whatever total amount you buy out a player for is proportionally distributed through the years you still owe the contract. The difference between each year's buy out amount and original yearly amount is freed from the cap.

IE:

If we owe Beans 10 mil for this year and 12 mil for next year, and we buy him out for 14 million total, we would buy out Beans at 6.36 million for the first year and the rest (7.64 million) for the next year. The cap amount freed would be around 3.44 mil for the first and 4.36 the next.

That's my understanding as well, I havent seen anything so far that says buyout rules were changed. It's our only option to rid ourselves of Biedrins, and considering the dearth of big men in the league and the fact that shedding some money wouldnt help us with FA signings, I dont see it happening. RJ either for the same reason. Thats 2 huge expirings next year along with the hopefully promising #7 pick. Could land us a top player from a team looking to rebuild or one that's looking for a new home.

No way would I trade away assets like Klay or a #7 pick just to clear RJ and Beans' contracts. If this team is going anywhere, it'll still be on the way two years from now when they come off the books for a cool 20 mil together. If there's any reason we can't wait two years because we fear injury or age, then this core is already a non-starter.

I wouldn't mind buying them both out together at 7 mil per year per player to clear 6 million each year. We could sign a consistent backup big like Kwame and pickup someone cheap for depth-- but then again, it's not my 28 million.

Jeez, I'm definitely happy to be wrong about this. Let's do this!

It's a tricky one though, because as is, Andris is our backup big. If we buy him out to free up coin, we run the risk of, ummm, no one signing with us? Or, even worse, we throw a long term contract at a guy thats awful in panic.

I'd rather buy out Jefferson. Easier to replace, less risk. We need guys that will keep Boguts minutes tolerable.

That might be true. Andris at 10-12 minutes per game is tolerable but only if he plays with Lee or someone like Sullinger who can provide some offense.

You literally can't play Andris with anyone other than an offensive savant at PF.
