Did he have concussion issues during his playing days? I do not recall. A quick google search didn't return much. Then again, it probably wasn't as well documented during his early years.

Pretty sure he had multiple concussions during his playing days. He would often have migraines that lasted days after a game, which is an association with brain trauma. He also got concussed when he drove his car off a cliff in 2010, which may very well have been another suicide attempt.

Tragic stuff. The lawsuits against the NFL can only grow if these situations keep popping up.

Wow, shotgun shot to the chest is how he did it. I wonder if he wanted to preserve his brain so studies can be done? That couldn't have been an instant death, what a way to go.

Why did this suddenly jump to concussion talk? Did I miss something?

It's just been speculated in articles out there that he had serious issues stemming from concussions he had suffered throughout his playing career and that it was the main reason he chose to end his life, as well as the way he chose to end it.

The reported death of Seau draws comparisons to Dave Duerson. While it's too early to know whether Seau had similar intentions, Duerson purposefully shot himself in the chest in order to preserve his head for research. The former Bears standout suffered multiple concussions while playing in the league.

And yet morons like James Harrison and Lamar Woodley rip the NFL for suspending players for bounty gate. Things like this are why Roger Goodell is taking such a hard line. You never know how brain injuries turn out.

Add Seau to this list.

At least he didn't get struck by lightning twice like one of them.

Grendon beat you to the punch in another thread. Embarrassinggggggg!!

Seriously though, that it some freaky stuff about that '94 Chargers squad.

Oh I saw his post in the other thread, I was just posting a link to the old article documenting how and when each of the first 7 died.

Who was the 8th and how did they go?

Terribly tragic story. I was heartbroken when I saw this. He was one of my favorite non-Packers growing up.

Apparently, Seau tried to commit suicide a couple years ago when he drove his car off a cliff after getting into a fight with his GF. He survived, and said he fell asleep at the wheel. Seems ominous now.

I saw Marcellus Wiley on ESPN and he seemed absolutely crushed, and the press conference with Seau's mom was just heart-wrenching.

I love football. Loved playing it, and love following it. But, if we can't figure out a way to protect players from suffering these concussions, then I'd rather ban the sport then allow things like this to continue.

Sure it is a violent sport and people are taking risks, but those are their risks to take, it shouldn't be your place or my place or anyone else's place to tell them they can't play football. Not that it is even realistic to think that will will ban the sport because it will never happen but that entire thought process makes no sense to me.

Some of the comments at the end of the deadspin story are funny if you read through.

It's a tough issue that I vacillate on constantly. I agree with your philosophy in general - the idea that people should be able to make their own choices. But, I also feel that sometimes the community needs to step in to protect its own from harm. There are all sorts risk-taking activities that society has chosen to demonize and have been legally prohibited. Maybe football falls into that category...maybe it doesn't. But, admittedly, I'm pretty shaken by hearing about the suicides/deaths of football players, culminating Seau's death, so this is going to need more thought on my part.

You're going a bit too far there, HR. There are a lot of things not-named football linked to suicide, and having .005% of your sport's alumnus commit suicide (maybe .5% depression rate) in a billions upon billions dollar sport is probably going a little too far.
