Quick OT addition about Dr. Brain Cole. didnt want to make a new thread for this

I know all of his credentials have been posted on the website more than once, and how the bulls medical staff has been bashed to some degree on the board. They have gotten return/expected dates wrong and missed the Deng injury. Deng injury was likely missed by the radiologist, not Dr. Cole specifically.

Now what derrick is getting is surgery (duh, i know) and Dr. Cole is the best of the best for that. Maybe he does not have the exercise kinesiology experience, I dont know, but he knows surgery. My roommate is a future orthopedic surgeon, and I had another well known orthopedic surgeon as a guest in our house the past weekend. Both speak highly of him. In fact, our guest, orthopedic surgeon himself, flew in just to get his own knee evaluated by Dr. Cole which he injured playing soccer and had failed surgery before. so in conclusion, in Dr. Cole, I trust.

Btw, welcome SlimJim. Awesome first post...

If it was my ACL which was torn, I would be more than thrilled to get Dr. Cole as my surgeon because I don't need to play basketball at the NBA level. But, Rose needs a second/third opinion on the process of the surgery. He is also better served getting operated by a surgeon who understands basketball ACLs than just soccer or normal human being ACLs and who has the experience of operating on another NBA ACL. There might be one or two surgeons of those types in the US.
I might be wrong but I doubt Dr. Cole has done ACL surgery on a NBA player. It might be a little bit of paranoia but that tiny difference might be a big deal in having issues like Tracy McGrady, Arenas etc...or back to being a stud.
Also, I am not sure how much trust Rose/GarPax have in the staff even if there is a slight belief that this happened because Rose was compensating for his other injuries and he wasn't shown the right path.

Your response made me google a couple names, Brian cole did surgery on Tmac in 2009, brandon roy saw him but Dr. cole said surgery would not benefit him. these are just ones I could find quickly. I dont think Dr cole really does common knee surgeries like ACL for people like you or me anyways (no offense). He pretty much caters towards professional athletes or to innovative procedures that advance the field.

How about the famous Dr.Andrews from Alabama who don't half the NFL knee operations.

That doesn't give a lot of confidence. TMac has never been the same and Roy basically is done(he probably could not have been repaired even by GOD). I am no way doubting Dr. Cole is not an expert. But, there is definitely some haziness to him doing this surgery on Rose.
BTW, to your no offense point unless your guest is a professional athlete, why is Dr. Cole consulting on him? Every doctor will do a surgery including Dr. Cole if he is paid the right amount of $$$ or to experiment his innovative procedure on a normal person first.

Thank you for an awesome first post, I've never known so much about knees in my life before. Thanks for offering your expertise!why

edit: why did Shumpert get surgery already and it takes so long for Derrick. I understand the swelling has to be gone, but I thought it was the same injury?

Don't get hung up on the Roy/TMac thing. Roy has full blown arthritis in his knee caused by a lack of/damaged cartilage. His problem is entirely due to a genetic predisposition and a string of bad luck. The only thing the doctors could really do for him was ease the pain by removing his menisci. As opposed to Rose who suffered a freak accident with very little risk of long term damage.

I haven't looked into Tracy's story at all, but I'm pretty sure he didn't have a torn ACL. I'll look into it and see what I find.

Again, this is Derrick's first knee surgery, and it is the result of a freak play, so we have nothing to worry about at this point. Brandon Roy and Tracy had several and were caused by chronic (recurring) problems.

In the OP I said that there is a lot of rehab we can do before the surgery. They probably want to regain some range of motion and get the swelling down. Makes for an easier surgery (less scar tissue) and faster rehab. In Shumpert's case, they probably wanted to get him under the knife as quickly as possible since there is a small risk of further complications. There are pluses and minuses to both approaches, but IMO the Knicks are making a mistake. I think it was mentioned earlier, but Dr. Cole, the Bulls team doctor, is one of the most respected knee surgeons in the world. We're in pretty damn good hands.

Wow, first off welcome to the board SlimJim, and thanks for such an awesome and informative first post. Feel free to drop some more sports medicine knowledge whenever you feel so inclined!

Also, thanks chicagoballer for the extra info on Dr. Brian Cole, I am actually a little more at ease now with the possibility of him performing the surgery on Rose.
From a ESPN chat:

"Omer Asik seems like a perfect fit for Miami I think. What about a Boozer and Asik for Bosh swap"
