What about Bernard James?

Postby JazzItUp13 on Sun Jun 03, 2012 1:36 am

I think if the magic could get him he would be a great pickup. Backup Center or maybe even @ PF behind big baby...can rebound, score in the post, and plays great defense/ shot blocking...shouldn't the magic at least bring him in for a workout?
I got a question why they hating on me....

Screw 19 year olds with tons of upside, give me the 27 year old backup center who's already at or past his prime any day

You guys are talking sh** about Bernard James without knowing anything about him. He is 27, went into the Military out of HS, was a SGT in the Air Force, picked up basketball in the service and that's where Leonard Hamilton and FSU discovered him. He is a solid player and I would love to have him on the Magic.

Is he a stand up guy? Yes. Would he be a great locker room guy? Definitely. Am I grateful as an American that him and many others choose that path following high school? Absolutely, but this is a business and using a draft pick on a 27 year old who's widely regarded to go undrafted, isn't a good business decision. It has nothing to do with his character as a person or individual. If he goes undrafted would I want to Magic to bring him in for a tryout? Of course, but I would not use an asset to get him.

He is 27, not 37. Still has a good 5-7 yrs of good basketball left. Nobody said use a 1st rd pick on him.

I see us going after a guy like Bernard James. We need a back up center but we don't need to break the bank on one either. Just a someone who can play 10-12 minutes a game, rebound, alter shots, and finish easy buckets in the paint. Bernard James would be a nice pick up.

I'm an FSU alum so i'll try to be objective. The guy hustles and has good basketball IQ, he's also got good character. He's not the most athletic and isn't dominate by any means, doesn't shoot particularly well but seems to have a knack for boards. He reminds me of a black Nick Collison. Do you spend a draft pick on the guy? Heck no, but if he's sitting there in free agency I'd love to take him. That's the kind of guy that gets the loose balls, plays the heart and hustle role, you need that guy on a championship squad. So i'm all for him if the price is right.
Whether you think you CAN or you think you CAN'T, you're right.

The Magic has a good record of buy 2nd round picks. If Orlando could purchase James' draft rights, then he would be a great practice squad guy.

Didn't we have a conversation about a guy like this 10 years ago, a guy named Rashad Griffiths?

I was at Wisconsin when Rashard Griffith played, and can comment. He was a head case as a student. He had physical ability but no drive. And he was into a fair bit of trouble. These are some of the reasons he never played one minute in the NBA.
