'13 Draft Thread (Let's talk late lotto again! Yaaay!!)

Post#1 » by jakecronus8 » Wed Aug 15, 2012 2:05 pm

Thought I'd get it started with this snippet from today's wiretap.

Chris Walker fully intends to enter the NBA draft after one year at Florida.

“Coach (Billy Donovan) said where my skill level is, if that's what I want I should go for it,” said Walker, who has committed to the Gators' 2013 recruiting class. “What I keep hearing is that I'm a potential lottery pick. But I'm not satisfied.”

Donovan believes the 6-foot-9 Walker can play small forward or power forward at the college level.

“I can shoot 3s now,” Walker explained. “I can finesse you. I can dunk on you. I can guard anything, and I'm rebounding better. When I block shots I catch the ball. I can post you up with my back to the basket and hit you with a post move. Or I can face you up and use my quickness to blow by you.

“NBA draft people have said I'm like a sick mix of Kevin Garnett and Perry Jones III.”

Combination of Oscar, Jordan, Magic, Duncan, and Shaq.

In all seriousness, we won't know a ton about the draft for a bit, but on paper it appears really weak overall and especially weak at PG, SG, and SF.

I really like C.J. McCollum and B.J. Young.

Wasn't impressed by either of UNC's big freshman this year (Hairston and McAdoo). Intrigued by Michael Carter-Williams. I think C.J. Leslie is a great SF prospect if he can develop his skills away from the basket. Reminds me of Gerald Wallace.

David Lee is already in the NBA, Luke. We can't draft him.

Try to keep up, alright? :D

So is Shabazz going to have to play in Europe this year? Or does the NCAA "investigation team" just need their pockets lined...

If they declare him ineligible, I'd like to see him play in the D-League.

Moralists are pissed at Stern for letting this happen re: Shabazz, what with this terrible age limit. Sorry, why can't these kids just follow the damn rules?

He's been declared ineligible for receiving improper benefits. It's temporary while the NCAA investigates.

Easier said than done. We're not talking about the rules for Candyland.

While I don't feel this draft is as deep as 2012 was, If you get a high lotto pick, you could grab a very talented player such as a Shabazz, Noel, Mitchell, McAdoo or Zeller. Honestly, I'm just waiting for the 2014 draft. That is going to be packed with franchise changing players, especially if Andrew Wiggins can re-classify and move up a year to be taken in 2014. You would have Jabari Parker, Andrew Wiggins, Julius Randle, Aaron Gordon, the Harrison twins and the all mighty Glenn Robinson JR 8-)

I'm just glad we have the age minimum so teams can really get a good read on Kemba Walker and Jimmer Fredette before making horrible mistakes on them.

Report: Shabazz Muhammad ineligible for UCLA's China trip
According to February's report, the NCAA was exploring connections between Muhammad's family and financial advisors Benjamin Lincoln and Ken Kavanagh.

Specifically, sources said Lincoln paid for two of Muhammad's unofficial visits during his recruitment, while Kavanagh helped fund Muhammad's AAU team, Dream Vision.

Ron Holmes, Muhammad's father, confirmed both statements to CBSSports.com back in February, believing no wrongdoing occurred in either instance.

I'd have to think he could make a lot more money in europe, but the d-league would probably be better for him.

Sure. That sounds like it would be really strong support for the age limit.

College isn't the NBA, and if you can't scout, you can't scout. It's like giving an illiterate person more time to read.

Sure, there are instances of college players not doing well or teams still drafting poorly.

But I'm grateful for this age rule and would like it to extend to two years. For every LeBron that is "held back" there are about five Kwame's that we have no clue about but might learn a lot more with a year of school.

Plus guys like Monta Ellis then can light it up in college for a year and get drafted in a more proper position.

The age rule should disappear and the NBA should subsidize a real minor league and stop leaning on higher education to do it for them.

At the very least, phase out the amateurism requirement as the Olympics have.
