Why doesnt Jonas get the ball more?

Post#1 » by Mack11 » Sat Nov 17, 2012 8:48 pm

I see him rolling on pick n rolls or just posted up like a boss in the post, yet our players show him that disrespect by passing it to turdnani whos obviously camped at the 3 waiting to take his brick

do our players not trust him yet or whats the deal

He doesnt have great natural offensive talent IMO. Doesnt have the natural footwork and touch of a guy who is going to be an offensive force.

val is all elbows, he needs to get stronger.

He' looked pretty bad when trying to create for himself today. I think he flourishes as a Noah, Krusty type player and not the post up face up guy on offense. The kid is so active that he'd be a pain in the ass to kepp off the boards.

He got no moves yet. But seriously not his fault we can't score.

He had some legendary finishing rate on rolling to the rim in Europe. His iso game is raw but we should at least be hitting him on the roll. I think Jose and Lowry have been reluctant to do so because of how nervous he looks in the isos but someone has to get them to let him finish in the paint.

Pretty sure Casey doesn't trust him at all on offense. The players probably see that he is open but the shots are already assigned to our 2-3 options.

He was at 12.8 FGA per 36 before this game, that's solid volume for a rookie...

I mean he's not finishing at a super high percentage or anything either. If he was shooting like 52-60% I see there being a lot more of an argument here. I hope he increases his percentages, gets more trust and respect, and gets more touches as the season goes on.

If hes not there for offence, whys he starting then? wouldnt it be best to keep him on the bench till late in the game where we actually need his defence rather than pickin up his usual 2 quick fouls which leave him glued to the bench

The whole offense sucks. If you watch the spurs, they run plays thats gets everyone involved on offense. The raptors (coach casey) seems to think derozen is lebron and bargnani is dirk and no one else needs to touch the ball. The first 5 minutes today and val or mcquire didn't touch the ball once, pretty hard to play confidently when your completely ignored all the time.

He lacks the polish and defenses often will send over an extra defender to double him at the markers when he has the ball on a post-up forcing him to pass out of the double because he isn't exactly a proficient passer passing out of trouble against trap and it usually results in a turnover. According to SynergySports he has a turnover rate of 23.1% which is godly high, so that's probably why the team doesn't trust him lol. And he needs to stop swinging his elbows.

However, there shouldn't be any excuses as to why he's getting looked off when he dives to the rim after slipping the screen. He's got hands of glue being able to catch the ball in any awkward position.
Basketball is like poetry in motion, cross the guy to the left, take him back to the right, he's fallin back, then just J right in his face. Then you look at him and say, "What?" - Jesus Shuttlesworth

He get's great positioning, so that shows he knows how to use his size. He also shows he can hit mid-range jump shots. He just doesn't look comfortable on the low-block but is progressing faster than expected.

This is more of an issue with Ed davis since last year...hes done nothing but positive things when he gets the rock on the block. As for Jonas hes seen enough touches. LIke others have mentioned he doesnt have the polish, footwork or arsenal of moves. Right now hes better utilized as an energy player who'll have to work for his points. He isnt a workhorse in the post nor do i think he'll ever be one.

The only way he will evolve into a better offensive player is to get touches in places on the court where he is capable of scoring even if at this time he is not.

He needs at least another 3-4 touches a night where he can possibly make a bucket. This freeze out stuff (not that I think players are making a conscience effort to deny him the ball) is going to regress his progress, even if he takes a bad shot those bad shots will lead to better shots or the ability to make those shots in the future.

Most of those shots are putbacks though.

Some of them are putbacks and it's clear that Casey doesn't consider him to be an option on offense.

Well it would be better than Bargs bricking @ 35%. Just looked up Bargnani's stats, he was playing better as a rookie...
I think it's fair that Val doesn't get many opportunities on isos, as he is not capable yet to play 1on1 to good results, but when he is rolling after screen, these times you can trust him to score or get fouled.
