Kobe talks to SAS about struggles, Career, etc (ESPN)

Post#1 » by Kilroy » Wed Dec 12, 2012 8:31 pm

Good interview. In essence, he says the first step is just figuring how to play together to maximize their collective talent, thinks the roster is fine, and thinks Nashtoni can adjust so it all works.

He also says they're slow, he's the fastest on the team but he's 50... But that speed doesn't win championships, neither does athleticism, deciding how they want to play and playing as a cohesive unit does.

Also thinks it's Pau that's the key to everything instead of Nash, thinks Pau will be in the post a lot more than he was before he got hurt, but thinks it's on him to come back in perfect shape, with the aggression, will to win. D'Antoni wants them to tell him if they think they're being misused so it's on Pau to make sure that happens, but Kobe has talked to D'Antoni about Pau's usage too...

Liked D'Antoni because of how he made adjustments to the talent he had in the Olympics... Thinks he and Nash are smart enough to adjust their system to the players we have.

Once Jimmy said Phil was an option, he thought it was a forgone conclusion that Phil would be the coach but likes D'Antoni too... (Throughout the interview though, I get the impression Kobe may be losing his faith in him... You be the judge...)

Dwight needs to work on his free throws but he is and it's getting better. They are both working on their deficiencies... Kobe on turnovers.

Pau back to the basket in the low post, Dwight in the mid post... Neither beyond the Free-throw line.

Pau uses his skill in the post, Dwight faces up and uses his lateral quickness to get to the basket, receive Oops from the outside or from Pau, and crash the boards...

It's been done before... Just stop over thinking it...

That's fine but then why have Nash? A different guard would make more sense. You bring Nash in to run pick and roll and make plays.

So it actually is complicated. :D They need to find a way (when everyone is healthy) to be able to have Nash with the ball a lot and use his abilities, Kobe to get his looks, Gasol to Post Up, Howard to get looks, etc. When Nash is running pick and roll you can't have the paint clogged or it will look and work terribly.

One thing I agree on though...Gasol makes a lot of sense in the post. He is such a good passer from there and Howard off of the ball as the rebounder is nice...

A lot to consider when the team is completely together. And they have to get it together now with just Howard/Kobe. I would like to see Kobe more in the post though at the moment.

Well its nice to see Kobe take accountability and acknowledge his mistakes. You can just tell that he's at a point in his career where he just wants to play basketball and avoid all the other bull ****.

As far as the whole Pau thing, I admire Kobe's confidence and faith in him but I don't buy it. We're going to trade him at some point this season if we really want to win a championship.

I thought it was interesting that this has been a recurring theme in recent interviews with Kobe... Lots of references to Phil's coaching style/influence recently.

one thing i've absolutely loved about kobe throughout the yrs is how he stands up for and always speaks highly about pau. pau is always getting the short end of the stick both from coaches (taking a backseat to bynum/howard in the post without complaint) and from fans (people were attacking him for making injury excuses for crying out loud).

pau isn't perfect, and he's certainly come up short at times, but he deserves so much better.

Maybe not... It was subtle if it was there at all.

I felt better after the interview too actually. It really seemed like people where all on the same page more than I feared.

But I hope this wasn't just Kobe's take... What I really hope is that they are going to work on utilizing Pau more effectively... I feel like that may be the key too...

kobe posting up a lot more in the last few games.
that is und'antoni offense. so i guess the coaching staff is adjusting to the talent that they have. thats a good thing.
i still believe that the team will be better in the next few games.

Damn that was a good interview, it kinda makes me sad knowing that 24 isn't going to stick around for much longer. That interview kind of refreshes my urge as a fan to see this team succeed I never thought I'd say this but thank you SAS. 8-)

Great interview. So much Phil influence.

Just noticed.... Kobe and Dwight are 1st and 6th in turnovers this season...

Then again Durant and Westbrook are 6th and 8th.
