Terrific Grantland Knicks article

Post#1 » by nykinoz » Sat Dec 15, 2012 12:32 am

This is by Zach Lowe, who is quickly becoming my favourite NBA writer.

http://www.grantland.com/blog/the-trian ... ing-threes

Here is a snippet, but i suggest you read the entire piece:

Stoudemire fits all of this like a glove. Lineups lacking one or both of the Chandler/Anthony duo just don’t have enough inside presence or dribble penetration to create looks for the rest of New York’s roster, heavy on spot-up guys and low on off-the-bounce creators. Stoudemire’s pick-and-roll game is the perfect answer, and the Knicks have a floor-spacing center in Rasheed Wallace to pair with Stoudemire so that Amar’e doesn’t have to be the lone big on the floor defensively. Bringing Stoudemire back to his pick-and-roll roots without Melo and Chandler around to take up space will also generate more free throws.

Good find, and good to see you still posting Oz

I agree, I like reading Lowe across all of his NBA articles, much better analysis than most of his peers. He has come across as a bit of a Boston homer in the BS Report podcasts, maybe just vibing off Simmons.. His early stuff on the Knicks was a bit more skeptical and critical of our age, but so was most of the press and half of this board

Rasheed Wallace is what's gonna help Amar'e Stoudemire fit.

I asked Woodson about three weeks ago if he could possibly start Stoudemire if the Knicks were something like 17-3 upon Stoudemire’s return. He rightfully called that speculation, but here are the Knicks, at 17-5 and still waiting on Amar’e. Woodson has no choice, and I suspect he and the Knicks know this now: Stoudemire has to come off the bench.

This part of the article is so garbage.
So garbage.
... and wrong.

Really? Woodson has no choice now? He definitely has a choice. No matter how many stats he can throw out. Stats are facts, but his interpretation of those stats definitely is not. Hopefull Woodson is smart enough to not to listen to guys like this.
It's hard being a Knicks fan...

I remain with my conviction that STAT will start, and we won't stop winning.

It all will be very interesting to see how the newly healthy players get blended into the mix. I, too, thought an Amar'e-Sheed pairing would be a really good one since their games compliment each other on both ends of the court.

I also feel the media seems to be trying to impose their idea that Amar'e has to come off the bench or that he won't fit and screw things up chemistry wise if he starts. I think the media has a short memory about facts and evidence when it doesn't suit their ideas. Or prefer to ignore it until it becomes obviously undeniable... then they still deny it is as long as they can trying to convince us it's not what we are seeing....lol.

Well, the truth is that Amar'e coming off the bench really is the smartest move to make. The Knicks have the 2nd best offense in the league as it is, their scoring falls off drastically when Carmelo is off the floor, and Amar'e is more than likely not going to help the defense. Adding Stat to the starting 5 gives diminishing returns at best and is a net negative at worst, while having him play mainly with the second unit and staggering minutes can help immensely.

I agree that it seems that the ideal rotation right now would have STAT coming off the bench, in an attempt to balance things and maximize each lineup's potential. Imagine having a real inside-out threat everytime on the floor !

Also, despite our great record, what surprises me the most thus far, and I must admit I'm a bit disappointed, is our so-so defense. Prior to the season, I think most of us pictured this team as a top notch defensive machine, with the personel we have and coach Woody being known as a defensive minded one. Turns up we are decent on that side overall but there are too many possessions where we either seem lost or literally give the impression of taking the play off. As the article points out, our main weakness could end up being our D and that was the last thing I would have thought entering the season...

+1
The key is PG play to make this all work and we have the right pieces in place now to do that.

See, when people criticize articles for "hating" on their team, which happens to more than just the Knicks, as someone pointed out, what they are mostly annoyed at is that they are doing "analysis" based on past perceptions of the team, or recycling even more recent myths, and just commenting off that.

Honestly, what bothers me more than they are "hating" is the sheer laziness of it, and that because of it, casual or well, less bright, fans tend to repeat it.

I have respect for Grantland writers, Bill Simmons, that site that breakds down offenses - is that Grantland too?

These guys actually ANALYZE. They actually try to understand where teams are NOW. Even when it's not favorable to the Knicks, these sites (and some posters here) I can get behind. All the other sh*t used to bother me, now I just ignore it.

I think Amare will start out coming off the bench but he will be back in the starting line-up eventually. I think we'll start Chandler, Amare, Melo, Kidd, and Felton and Amare will be the first big subbed out for JR Smith. Shumpert and Novak will be next on the depth chart. One of Felton or Kidd will be kept on the floor most of the time with Prigs getting only spot minutes. Rasheed will also get spot minutes and foul trouble minutes.

They envision an 8-man playoff rotation with a rotating door on the 9th man IMO (either Wallace, Prigs, or eventually Camby). Some of you may not like it, but you can't argue that it's a talented 8-9 guys we've got to throw out there. Brewer will get squeezed and he, Rasheed, and Camby will be the "insurance" plus defensive specialists when the situations call for it.

If Stat comes off the bench he will get so many more touches with Melo off the floor. Him Shump Smith Wallace, wow, that is a scary second unit.
Clyde Drexler, called Oakley a dirty player. Told of Drexler’s comment, Oak said, “He can blow me.”

To summarize for the lazy:

1. NYK on record pace for 3PA and lowest turnover rate, but it's not completely unprecedented and is likely to continue.

2. For the success to continue, Amar'e must come off the bench because Carmelo is dominant at the 4 and because the "Big 3" don't all fit below the FT line.

Also, Woodson is quoted that he's using a modified version of D'Antoni's system.

I've been saying this all along, and my hope is that egos don't trump logic. Amar'e has to come off the bench.

Woodson said before the game he has indeed swiped some of his predecessor’s philosophy. “I’ve used a lot of Mike’s system,” Woodson said, “but I’ve obviously tried to expand it to other things I like to do.

I'm glad that Woodson has incorporated the spread offense in his offense but I'm also glad his own offense is much more expanded than the former coach's too simple P&R offense which became predictable and easy to defend without a HOF PG to run it.
