Salary question, child support

Post#1 » by tawp » Tue Oct 23, 2012 9:33 pm

New to board. Signed up to ask one question. My niece is the daughter of Omar Thomas, the ex-player of Italian Serie A and Serbia, current player with Russia Kryla. He is currently suing my sister to reduce his child support payments. He has turned in as evidence contracts stating he made $70K USD playing for the entire season with Avellino and $18K USD for the season playing for Rimini (also $30K playing in Serbia). He currently claims to be making $70K with Russia and wants to cut his child support in half. Are these valid contracts? We have no defense to claims of foreign income. My niece is six years old, and deserving of the truth.

sorry about that man. He maybe earning that much but contracts i think depend on player to player basis and are often confidential.

I'm no expert but I'm pretty sure he would have to provide copies of the contracts to the court backing up those numbers if he is to reduce his child support payments

I would give FIBA a call http://www.fiba.com/pages/eng/fc/tool/cont.asp?. All uniform player contracts and clearance goes through them. They have all the info.

That being said a Euro player is on very short term contract and they change a lot. This is not like an NBA guy on a long term guaranteed deal. He gets a little older, loses a step, has an injury... his value goes down fast. Most players only make it for a short time. That being said he needs to take care of his kids now and beyond his pro basketball days... the issue of fairness is complicated and comes into play... While I think the mom does deserve to know what he really makes.... I also want to point out that overseas players in many cases don't make what people think they make. Women get interested in them thinking they are rich when they likely make a lot less than an engineer for example who doesn't lose his income and retire after he messes up his knee at 29.

I'm also not a big fan of running a guys name through the mud. You could have asked your question and left his name out. The answer still would have been call FIBA. So I think his name should be removed if you want to be decent about it.
I like my prospects the same way I like my women... foreign- pickIBL

Dude, firstly it is always unfortunate when a child is in the middle of a situation like this.
What you should try ask your brother-in law to evidence is his net income after bonuses and any other cash benefits. Often players get a pay to play bonus, or a win by win bonus. So 100 bucks for every win, 200 bucks for 5 straight games over 10 points another performance related remuneration. The salary levels you describe do sound reasonable, but again he may be getting bonuses or even under the table cash. however in alot of European leagues, teams struggle to cover payroll, so he could use that n certainty to his defence...

This whole story was kinda fishy, but all I can tell, there is no way Thomas' salary is this low. It is way off. Official red star site reported his current Russian team offered him 500.000 US dollars, financially stable team and all. He is the one who should provide evidence tho.
America - We didn't win World cup cause we don't care for FIBA.
Germany - Bruh, we don't even care for Basketball.
