Head Coach candidates

Post#1 » by GrandAdmiralDan » Tue Jan 8, 2013 6:52 am

I don't know if this thread is necessary or if this should just be part of the "Skiles is out" thread, but if we want a clean thread to only look forward (i.e. save the understandable Skiles bashing for the other thread), here you go.

First name that enters my mind is Kelvin Sampson. I can't think of a better choice off the top of my head. Which is why I'd think this thread would be useful.

Who are all the candidates we should be considering?

I don't know that a former head coach would be the way to go, other than Jerry Sloan (that would be my dream candidate), but let's list those former head coaches that are available and looking for a new gig.

Let's also list up-and-coming assistants.

I will also call especially on Chuck Diesel to list coaching candidates that are currently coaching overseas or in the NBADL :)

I suppose we can list college coaches as well, but I'm not a fan of having a college coach make a direct leap from the NCAA to being an NBA head coach. I think you at least need to prove you can operate in this very different world as an assistant coach, like Kelvin Sampson has done.

Have at it.

Supposedly Boylan is the tank man the rest of the way so this is a ways out.

Honestly, I'm not too worried about finding a long term coach right now. All I want is a guy that will develop young players.

We need Hammond to get the can and for Kohl to sell

Make Jeff Van Gundy an offer he can't refuse.

Ditto Sloan.

If assistant then Sampson or Malone.

Hire the former center Marc Jackson. Start a trend. Maybe it'll work for us.

Yes, I hear all of that :)

I just really think a group effort to compile a list of head coach candidates would be useful. Then we can discuss the pros and cons of all of them :)

Not to concerned now. But as I said on the other thread. Sloan, Sampson and Malone are my 3 favs.

I can't say I know that much about Mike Malone off the top of my head. What are the reasons he would be a good hire?

Brett Brown.

Been at the Spurs for quite a few years. Had head coaching experience with the Australian National Team and in our domestic league (where if my memory serves me correctly he won 1-2 championships). A disciple of Popavich that knows what teams are like in small markets would be a bonus.

He was the defensive mind for the Cavs in their good years and for the Hornets just recently in their good years. One of the smartest dudes in the NBA. Was voted something like top assistant coach in the NBA last season by coaches and execs.

EDIT: I do find it curious though that guys like Terry Stotts, Jacque Vaughn, and Mike Dunlap got head coaching gigs over him this summer.

I just really like what Malone has done defensively for the Warriors this season with no Bogut in the middle. Heard nothing but good things about him.

Sampson. See if he can get anything out of Baddy.

Appreciate the info on Mike Malone and Brett Brown. Exactly the kind of stuff I was hoping for out of this thread. Keep it coming!

I would definitely add those two to the list of candidates I'd be interested in.

Jerry Sloan
Kelvin Sampson
Mike Malone
Brett Brown
Sam Cassell

There's my list so far.

I honestly hate the job he's done with the Australian national team so I'm not too keen, though given some of the other (realistic) suggestions I could live with him being in charge.

I think he did a reasonable job with the talent he had available. They put on a reasonable showing in London.

What did you dislike about his coaching?

Another coach that would be interesting: Nate McMillan. Was highly regarded in Portland up until the end (injuries played a massive role too on the teams performance), defensively focussed, involved with the US National team.
