Post#1 » by bigdogdylan5 » Thu Jan 17, 2013 9:53 pm

What are your guys thoughts on this? I have been trying to wrap my mind around this but its so crazy and Bizarre. Colin Cowherd said it best http://espn.go.com/espnradio/play?id=8852975 "This makes inception seem simple"

There's no way Te'o didn't know of the hoax. He supposedly knew her for 3 years and she had been part of many different tragedies from car wrecks to cancer...and he never once visited her?..yet he was so in love with her. Either Te'o is an absolute pathetic liar or he is about as naive as a 1st grader. It has to be one of the two.

What's more amazing is that it took this long for the media to dig up the info. I'm just as disappointed at them for being so lazy with this story.

As journalist you should always check up on the "facts". It's their job to do so, especially if you're going to make a huge deal out of it during the MSU game.

The car crash could've easily been checked up on.

From Deadspin:
http://deadspin.com/5976517/manti-teos- ... -is-a-hoax

Manti Te'o did lose his grandmother this past fall. Annette Santiago died on Sept. 11, 2012, at the age of 72, according to Social Security Administration records in Nexis. But there is no SSA record there of the death of Lennay Marie Kekua, that day or any other. Her passing, recounted so many times in the national media, produces no obituary or funeral announcement in Nexis, and no mention in the Stanford student newspaper.

Nor is there any report of a severe auto accident involving a Lennay Kekua. Background checks turn up nothing. The Stanford registrar's office has no record that a Lennay Kekua ever enrolled. There is no record of her birth in the news. Outside of a few Twitter and Instagram accounts, there's no online evidence that Lennay Kekua ever existed.

I'm starting to think that he really wasn't in on it. Him saying that they "MET" before could have just been a cover up of embarrassment from falling for a "Virtual/Online" girl.

I mean the guy was big man on campus & could have probably had ANY girl he wanted at ND. The fact that he fell for a girl online, how do you go about telling the guys/friends on your team about that? They would clown him EVERY DAY haha.

but we all know the truth will come out with time.......def a weird story though.

One of the guys who created that Catfish show said they had numerous emails from people that were curious about "Lennay" but they skipped over them, so Teo was def not the only fool to be caught up in this.

What in the hell is society coming to? that is all. Imagine the world in 20 years. Is face to face communication going to be some sort of unusual interaction?

I'll bet he was in on the hoax, but either way, he gets a WTF dude? I do hope the best for him from here on out, it'll be rough.

He is clearly gay. He was covering, to keep the teamate heat off. The fake long distance GF, etc gave him an excuse. Its obvious IMO.

He's either romantically involved with the gay guy behind the Twitter account or he lied about meeting/talking to "her" on the phone to save face for having a strictly online GF. Both scenarios would be hugely embarrassing for a college football player. I'm sure the truth will be revealed soon enough. Weird story. Either way, he's not very bright. He's also going to get rocked by teammates and opponents in the NFL. Will either make him better or he may breakdown...

The story is more damning on the current state of sports journalism, than it is on Te'o. It's sad how lazy the media has gotten, good on deadspin

I think if you put McGee back then, he would get those blocks just as easily as Russell did. Russell's athleticism was well ahead of the players of his time, and that's about it.

My friend brought this up tonight and it makes perfect sense. Gay kid at a Catholic school. In his mind any kind of lie was better than coming out at ND, let alone as the ND football team captain.

yep.

funny thing is, he probably thought that this would be safer than having a "real" fake girlfriend that might actually spill the beans about him or do something to blow his cover. lying about his fake girlfriend dying pretty much guaranteed he'd get exposed at some point, though.
