Why is defense considered ugly?

Post#1 » by xxSnEaKyPxx » Tue Jan 22, 2013 5:54 am

I've noticed whenever there is a game between two defensive teams, the media immediately jumps on it as an "ugly" game. Am I the only one that loves watching defense? Do other people consider defense to be ugly?

well sometimes teams just jack up some bad shot attempts and commit unforced turnovers, which doesn't really have to do with the defense of the other team

Are two high octane offenses not more entertaining and pleasurable on the eyes than a defensive matchup?

Also, most elite defensive teams aren't that good or creative on offense. When a team is elite on O and D, its historical.

Sometimes great defenses overlap into being gritty and dirty, and their synonym ugly gets involved with the commentators I guess.

Some of the best offensive teams play like crap on defense...I find that much harder to watch.

Agreed. I am much more annoyed as a fan watching a team give up easy baskets and show crappy effort on that end even if they are chucking up shots and hitting.

A high octane defense is much more exciting to watch than a high octane offense to me..

Yeah, I hate run and chuck type offensive games.

Games where teams are forcing each other to go to the 3rd / 4th option are great games.

because the games lack flow, its not all stops, its fouls free throws , timeouts for offensive defensive matchbox using up all 24 of the clock

The "goal" in basketball is to score.

In any scoring based sport, scoring is what truly excites people. This is something most definitely not unique to basketball.

A parade of freethrow shots is ugly, that's for sure.

Im one of those guys that generally leaned more tords the shootouts. i will say though that i was wowed by that Lakers/Celtics 2010 game 7. THAT was the most amazing grind-it-out hardcore defensive game ive ever witnessed, and loved every second of it

defensive teams are usually "ugly" because most of the time they are terrible offensive teams. The Clippers are 3rd , Spurs 5th, and the Thunder are 6th in defensive rating. All good defensive teams, none considered "ugly" because they are good offensive teams as well

Because Sportscenter only shows dunks and people in general are obsessed with offensive stats. When you break it down, the game is about putting the ball in the basket more than your opponent, and how you get it done doesn't really matter.

It's only ugly if the defense is the only thing winning the game for you.

MJ's Bulls were dominant defensively and offensively, and nobody considered his brand of basketball ugly.
Miami played great defense in their last 2 years, they were also highly entertaining.

That happens in a match up between two high octane offensive teams as well. The main difference is that games between two elite defensive teams tend to have a small number of possessions and thus those bad shots are highlighted.

Games between two elite offensive teams (and bad defensive ones) tend to allow a high number of shots so those bad shots are not as highlighted as they are in the other case.
