Pau Gasol Summer Trade

Post#1 » by Jajwanda » Fri Feb 22, 2013 10:55 pm

Looking for as much as salary cap savings as possible in addition to a late lottery first.

Cleveland will offer you a large TPE and your 1st round pick back....actually we just own the right to swap picks with you, but we will let that go.

Cleveland has tons of salary cap space. Gasol would give Cleveland a competitive team in 2013 (Kyrie-Waiters-Thompson-Gasol-Varejao-a wing like Bazz/McLemore/Smart/VO) that will compete for a playoff spot. Cleveland then would have a great chance to sign Gasol to a reasonable contract in the summer of 2014 and then go to LeBron and offer him the max to join a pretty good team.

Sure I can see LA taking that and Gasol being a 18 and 9 guy again on the Cavs easy.

LA could probably get a pretty decent player with that TPE. Free Agents want to go to LA.

Cleveland wouldn't be a bad option.

Cap space teams like Dallas or Atlanta might also be good options, if they miss out on free agents (i.e. Dwight) then 1 year of Gasol to keep them competitive, and getting cap space again next summer would be a good strategy. In fact, Dallas did exactly that this year.

Not sure if Lakers can get a pick on top of a TPE, but the market definitely looks better than at trade deadline this year.

Only if Earl Clark is included. Blue-chip prospect.

If the Rockets miss on Howard this offseason

I can see LA offering Gasol for TRob.

Then when Gasol expires then go after the 2014 free agents.

You're very close to the offer I was looking for.

I think the Lakers will explore trade parties prior to amnesty decision. In case no one bids for Pau, we pay him 19M to get rid of 85M in penalties. As is the lineup, just add back Jordan Hill, possibly Jamison too, a guard or 2, with more time together and a healthier Dwight will mean a very good team.

5: Howard - Hill
4: Clark - Jamison
3: MWP - ?
2: Bryant - Meeks
1: Nash - Blake

The value of an expiring contract is dependant on wheter or not you take salary back. If you want salary relief, you're likely not going to find it. because what's the point of trading your expiring contracts for another expiring contract? If you're trying to get instant cap space from a team under the cap, you can expect to have to give up something as incentive. Its going to be a hard sell to have a team eat 20 million dollars for Gasol. Given that the Lakers have no picks, I don't know what team will take him.

The Lakers have boxed themselves in by holding onto Gasol for too long. I'm thinking they'll probably have to amnesty him unless Howard walks.

I agree. I don't think that a trade is at all likely, but if he hits the wire you know Morey is putting in a bid!
