Dirk Nowitzki wrote:No, it won't be ridiculous. This is about now. I'm sure in 2004 no one was saying that Ronaldo was the best winger in the World. And then a few years later he was... and people looked back and laughed at it.

You're misinterpreting the point. Ronaldo's ability improved in that time period. I am not saying Modric will regress as a player.

Dirk Nowitzki wrote:Real Madrid won the Champions League last year. Should have won the league.

So you're saying they underachieved. Oh my, what does that say about Modric as a player!?

Dirk Nowitzki wrote:They went on a crazy winning streak to star this season. All with Modric being amazing for more than a year. I don't believe Pogba would have elevated them the way Modric does.

I've already provided my take on Real Madrid's form and how that is influenced by Modric. There is nothing new for either one of us in the first two sentences.

As for Pogba's hypothetical effect on Madrid, no, he would not have elevated them the way Modric does. That is because at this time Madrid is in bigger need of a player like Modric than a player like Pogba. You know who would surely help Real Madrid even more than either of them right now? Prime Claude Makelele. Does that make him better than Modric? No, because even if Claude Makelele was better than Luka Modric, this is not the valid argument to prove it.

Do you notice how low this exchange has been on analysis of the actual talent of Modric and Pogba and their respective strengths and weaknesses? Your arguments are based almost entirely on lengthy narrative-building, most of which fails minimal philosophical inquiry. That being the case, excuse me if i don't address the rest of your post because this is not the sort of conversation i want to be a part of.

Modric's got more discipline and is better at dictating tempo of a game, holding onto the ball, an excellent dribbler, and has great vision to start the build up- and he's shown it at high levels against solid EPL/La Liga teams and in the CL. Pogba has a hell of a long shot, great technique, way too much flair, is a solid tackler, and he's a ridiculously explosive athlete- but has he shown up in CL? I don't think so. Don't watch much Italian football, so I can't comment on the quality of the opponents there.
Tactically, Modric is a better player.

If this is even an argument then I say just give Pogba another year or two and it will no longer be a contest

Yeah, James is one of the best creators in football today. His vision and playmaking is absolutely top-notch. He has a cracking shot from distance and always plays well with Real Madrid too. He's easily within top-15 best players in the world, imo.

How so? If you look at his numbers, they are comparable if not better than some of the other young studs. Hazard, Pogba, Neymar, etc. Also, if you watch the games, you will realize how important he is to Madrid.

He has 16 and 13 despite missing 2 months. He's among the league leaders in chances created, and is in the top ten rated players in whoscored despite not being a dribbler, which is the main skill used on that site.

Before you say it's easy to do that in Madrid, he's having one of the best offensive season of any midfielder in the history of Madrid and is up there for the league as well. Fabregas was the last midfielder to get 13 league goals in that league.

I'm not saying he's the world's best, but something weird about putting Hazard at 5 and mot having James at all when. Their numbers are very similar despite James not being the main option and playing 1000 minutes less

I take James over Hazard without too much hesitation. I like Hazard but he doesn't do it for me.

James is one of the best players on a top-3 team in the world. In some nights, he outshines Ronaldo and everyone on the team. Dude has an insane vision and ability to create for others. James is a beast in every competition this year. Since the WC, he has been on fire and there are no signs of him cooling down.

The only player in the EPL that I may take James over is Aguero. But still, I'll stop and think about it.

In no special order, right now: Messi, Ronaldo, Suarez, Pogba, Tevez, Modrić, Hazard, Aguero, Ibrahimović, Neuer, Reus, Neymar, Verratti, De Bruyne, Kroos.

sounds like you're inferring that Serie A is not a big league?

Not as big as Premier League and La Liga. Think we all know that.
