I've been resigned to the fact that we're going to trade Puig ever since he was rumored to be out there for Syndergaard so I'm very interested in one of those Mets pitchers….Syndergaard or Matz to be exact. They need the bat. Puig's contract is friendly. But this isn't necessarily because I don't want Puig here. I've just been prepared for him to be traded for like a month…then the rumors this week didn't help.

If not them, then the Cueto and Aroldis rumor makes the most sense.
then after that I like Kazmir because he shouldn't cost us much of anything in comparison to what we have.

I don't think we're getting Zimmermann from Was
Pass on Jeff Samardzija

But I will say….Buster Olney just did a piece (mentioned on mlb trade rumors)on how the White Sox aren't making Chris Sale available but they should. We could make that work and I think Sale and his team friendly deal through 2019 is more than worth it for a top prospect + others….in fact, if you trade for Sale, I wouldn't bat an eye if Greinke opted out and walked.

Outlook on Puig and Dodgers' Pitching Future

Post#22 » by Ranma » Sun Jul 5, 2015 10:20 pm

I have similar feelings about Puig. I'm glad the organization is still hesitant to trade him, but looking at how he conducts himself, I'm more open to move Yasiel. I'd love to see him mature and make adjustments to be a bonafide superstar in a Dodgers uniform, but if his progress stalls, the organization may be better off dealing him when his value is at a high point. The only deals I've ever considered moving Puig for was for Giancarlo Stanton and a package centered around Kris Bryant. The Stanton ship has sailed for me but I'd still be open to getting a package of prospects that features Bryant. I heard the Cubs were really high on Puig in the past, so I assume they would still value him greatly.

I really like your suggestion of Scott Kazmir precisely because of his anticipated affordable price tag relative to his production. I was never really excited about paying a lot for Zimmerman whether it was cash or prospects, but he keeps getting mentioned with the Dodgers. I'm sure it has to do with Stan Kasten's association with the Nationals. Also, I agree with passing on Samardzija even as I'm not entirely sure why. I think it's his asking price for a contract.

Man, I'm late to the party on him, but Chris Sale sounds like he would be a major coup of an acquisition. However, I'm really looking forward to a future Dodgers rotation of:

    No-Brainer Keepers and Target
  1. Clayton Kershaw
  2. Shohei Otani (after being posted by NPB)
  3. Julio Urias

    Current Projected Hopefuls
  4. Yadier Alvarez
  5. Jose De Leon

I sure hope Otani's arm doesn't fall off before coming here. he is pitching at some insane velocity and frankly at unhealthy pace for his age, and needs to drop his sideshow trying to be a two way player.

and I don't think there is a chance in hell the cubs trade their golden boy Kris for Puig. it is more likely that Jeff Loria and his DTS ways would trade Stanton for cheap contract of Puig.

Otani's Arm

Post#24 » by Ranma » Mon Jul 6, 2015 6:35 am

Yeah, Otani's arm health is a legitimate concern while he's over in Japan. Both Darvish and Tanaka quickly experienced arm trouble after coming over to the States. If it weren't for his desire to be a two-way player, he'd most likely be pitching in Dodger blue right now.

I agree that Kris Bryant is practically untouchable right now. Stanton's contract, on the other hand, scares me even with the Dodgers' near limitless resources.

I don't know if there is any scientific validity to what Darvish Yu claimed, but from observation of % of TJS needed between different countries, I would say the factor may include US's 5 men rotation versus Japanese league's usual 6 men rotation/South Korean's one day off per week, giving that extra day off. but yeah I still do think that no pitch count approach of NPB is archaic and idiotic. many Japanese managers still believe that using a pitcher's arm more and often makes an arm stronger rather than weaker despite so many young arms who are abused through their Koshien tornaments each year ends up permanently injured and never see a day in the pros.
anywho, sitting in that monstrous Koshien stadium where the Hanshin Tigers play to catch their high school torny is one of my far fetched dreams/fantasies. maybe somday.

Better stuff than Kershaw.
just doesnt go into games as deep and eat innings like Shaw…Honey could coach him up.

Kershaw vs. Sale

Post#28 » by Ranma » Tue Jul 7, 2015 3:02 am

It's hard for me to accept that anyone has better stuff than Kershaw overall, but Sale's fastball most certainly is higher than what Clayton usually operates at. He's clearly also having a better season than Kersh. Regardless, I'm still in love with our homegrown superstar. I just have to start paying more attention to Sale.

Otani has the velocity, but his fast ball does not move one bit. it's like Chan Ho Park's four seam, just faster. I would think Kershaw still has the better "stuff" than young Shohei. but that does not mean his stuff ain't any good, they are damn good, 101 mph is still 101 mph. but "stuff" wise Kershaw is historically filthy. Clay's curve is parallel to anyone in baseball today. his slider is becoming slowly his strike out pitch, and his fastball is just insane with movement at a historical level.

EJ Martinez Prompts Another Showdown Between Dodgers and Giants

Post#32 » by Ranma » Thu Jul 9, 2015 9:28 pm

Jesse Sanchez, MLB.com (7/9/15)
The Dodgers and Giants, the two teams that went head to head for outfielder Lucius Fox, ranked No. 3 on the international list, have each scheduled more private workouts for Martinez this week, and Los Angeles and San Francisco appear to be the front-runners. Fox signed with the Giants for $6 million on July 2 after being linked to the Dodgers for months.

The Cubs, White Sox, Rangers and Astros have each worked out Martinez privately at least twice.

K. Funkhouser, V. Gutierrez, and EJ Martinez

Post#33 » by Ranma » Wed Jul 15, 2015 3:41 am

Jim Callis, MLB.com (7/10/15)
The Dodgers have a pair of unsigned first-rounders in Vanderbilt right-hander Walker Buehler (No. 24 overall) and Louisville righty Kyle Funkhouser (No. 35), and they don't have much flexibility to pay them more than their assigned values of $2,094,400 and $1,756,100. Los Angeles has outspent its pool by $229,700, and its allocated total of $7,781,700 provides just $389,005 of wiggle room if it's willing to overspend by 5 percent (anything more would trigger the loss of a future first-round selection).

The Dodgers could save some money if Florida International first baseman Edwin Rios (sixth round) signs for less than $234,800, though any unsigned players in the first 10 rounds will have their assigned values removed from the team's pool. Los Angeles might be able to get Buehler $2.2 million or Funkhouser close to $2 million, but that's not quite the mid-first-round money they expected before their unforeseen slides on Draft day. There's a growing sense that Funkhouser will be the highest pick in the 2015 Draft not to sign.

Who are the favorites to land Vladimir Gutierrez? And any update on Eddy Julio Martinez?

12:11
Kiley McDaniel: Gutierrez hasn’t had workouts for scouts yet and these Cuban players often change a good bit, often for the better between defecting and first open workouts, so it’s too early to know price or teams on him yet.
Got some word this weekend that the Giants likely don’t pay what’s necessary to land Martinez after paying Lucius Fox $6 million, so I think the Dodgers are the landing spot for Martinez as I projected a few weeks ago. May be a little lower than the projected $11 million, too.

Hope you turn into Luke Hochevar bro.

I get that he wanted to be drafted higher and have a higher bonus….but we're on a short list of the top organizations in baseball and we develop arms as well as anybody in the game. He should have bet on us. I think he's going to regret this move.

oh well. We get Buehler and we get another pick next year.
more arms please.

Compensation Pick for Funkhouser (35th Overall in 2015 Draft)

Post#36 » by Ranma » Fri Jul 17, 2015 7:28 pm

I've mentioned before that I was more concerned with getting Walker Beuhler into the fold and not really a fan of Funkhouser's even though he supposedly represented great value at that selection. To be honest, I'm more looking forward to seeing who we get at 36th overall in a reportedly deeper 2016 draft class. While we're obviously not going to get anyone ranked nearly as high, I'm hoping we get a higher upside prep prospect with that pick. Funkhouser currently has control issues, so if he can fix that during his final year at Louisville, he'll probably get drafted higher.

Personally, I have my doubts on that, but even if he does, I also see him as another Hochevar where he won't really be a long-term ace in the Majors. Hopefully, we get another Kershaw out of this.
:P

Losing Funk, Gaining Crouse

Eric Stephen, TrueBlueLA.com (7/17/15)
The Dodgers inked Logan Crouse, a 30th-round pick out of Bloomingdale High School in Florida, for a $500,000 bonus.

Crouse, a 6'6, 220-pound right-handed pitcher, posted a 0.17 ERA in his senior season. Crouse also played football and basketball in high school. He was committed to play college ball at Florida State.

"You take everything that kind of makes Logan who he is, and you start thinking about three years, four years of added development, and if that progression takes place, you're talking about a possible frontline guy in the big leagues," his coach Kris Wilken told the Tampa Bay Times in June. "Whether that route goes through Florida State or the minor league, I don't think that really matters.
