FAQs

Since posting I've been getting a lot of the same questions, so I figured I would post a little FAQ.

Updates
1. Do you plan to keep updating the sheets?

I've been updating them for over a decade now. I have no plans to stop, as it is a key tool for me. I will continue to post the sheets as long as there is interest from the community at large!

Edits
1. Are you going to allow edits to the Google Doc?

At this time I have no intention of that. Mainly due to integrity issues. I have no challenge with copying the data and editing it yourself, but I don't want the public version of the sheet to get messy.

Salary Sheets
1. Why are some things highlighted in yellow?

These are salary items which have some kind of variable. Either the salary number is not official or I haven't been able to track down the exact number yet. In most cases, these will disappear after the cap is set and everything locks in. New contract estimates will also be in yellow until I have the official numbers.

Free Agents Alpha List
1. How do players get on the Free Agents Alpha list?

Every player on the list has either: played in the NBA, played with an NBA team in Summer League, gone to training camp with an NBA team, was mentioned as a prospect for the NBA Draft, or played in the NBA D-League

2. How do players get removed from the Free Agents Alpha list?

I remove a player once he has gone a year without playing professional basketball anywhere. In this case, if a player did not play anywhere in the 2015-2016 season, he has been removed. Exceptions are occasionally made for injured players.

3. Why are some players in green font on the Free Agents Alpha list?

Those players are currently signed to a contract with team outside of the United States.

4. Is the Free Agents Alpha list comprehensive?

Not even close. There are hundreds, if not thousands, of basketball leagues all over the globe. Accounting for every single player isn't something I wish to try to undertake! This list is players who have some relevance to the NBA, either in the recent past or potentially in the future. This is also one of the more time consuming updates to do, so it may all out of date at times. Lots and lots of research time on this one!

I will add to these FAQs as new ones comes up.

Thanks again to everyone for the interest. We've had massive traffic, I've gotten a lot of questions from all over, and to be honest, it has blown me away. It makes me very happy that so many folks are so interested in my work.

If you have any questions, you can hit me up on here. Quoting a post works best so I see it. You can also PM. You can also get me on Twitter at @KeithSmithNBA

Thanks again!

Ha! Huge difference in compiling info and making some educated guesses vs actually building a team. But I'll take the compliment all the same! :)

Every team has a numbers guy, maybe a few have guys they don't like? Worst that can happen is you're right where you are now.

Kinda upsetting seeing the Lakers have sooo much but other teams do as well... This is why a guy like Biyombo will get near 20m, Barnes near 16-18m, Waiters 14m, Speights 10m. My guess and I'm curious to see

Maybe I'm just reading the headings wrong. don't think the raptors are over or under by 9 million.

Salaries are 82.7. Derozan's cap hold increased to 15 from the allstar game I thought, not 9.5, so that's about 88.3. BB has an option and will opt out, so 85.3. I think they still have a cap hold on Nando Decolo to keep his rights (1.8) so 87.1 if they don't renounce it. 92 million projected cap so they have about 5 million in space. Minus salaries of two first round picks, including the 9th pick, they pretty much are dead even prior to resigning DD to a max deal, but that does get them to about 9 over if that's what you mean.

great job!

obviously, there are tons of variables, but it's a very good, one-stop road map that points out why the 'stupid' potential is so high this summer

I have one suggestion and it's very minor: I've only used xcel in spreadsheets before, but it had a feature that allowed you to lock the column headers in place, so as you scroll down the spreadsheet you can readily see what the columns are as the headers are always visible

They have 10 guaranteed contracts for a total of ~$69.9 million.

Then the total for the two draft picks is $3.25 million

Then I have them keeping FA rights (meaning not renouncing) all their FAs, including De Colo. Those cap holds total to ~$28 million

Add all those up and that is a total of ~$101 million, which is $9 million above the project cap of $92 million.

I'm not sure this works with a google doc, but I'll play around with it. I have it set up that way in the excel dump from my database, but not sure it translates. Unfortunately you lose some functionality when uploading to google docs.
