2017 Hawks Offseason Thread

It's a tad early, but I figure we can speculate on what approach and what players we'd like/expect the team to pursue this summer.

NBA Free Agency 2017: An Early Look at Each Team's Top Potential Targets

1. Darren Collison

2. Sergio Rodriguez

3. P.J. Tucker

Unless they plan on blowing up their core, the Atlanta Hawks will be operating as a capped-out team over the summer.

Millsap can grant them some flexibility if he opts into the last year of his deal, rather than exploring free agency. But it makes more sense for him to chase long-term money, and general manager Wes Wilcox told The Vertical's Adrian Wojnarowski re-signing him is "absolutely" Atlanta's top priority.

Pre-contract holds on Millsap, Tim Hardaway Jr., Mike Muscala and Thabo Sefolosha carry the Hawks' commitments past the $100 million mark. They'll need to try ducking the luxury tax while keeping everyone and then hope the mid-level exception—projected to reach $8.4 million for non-taxpayers, per RealGM—is enough to land impactful fish.

Basically: Atlanta cannot set its sights too high.

Targeting backup-caliber point guards and defensive specialists might even be a tad ambitious. But the offense could use a second-string playmaker such as Darren Collison or, more affordably, Sergio Rodriguez.

P.J. Tucker keeps with the Hawks' defensive theme and becomes particularly valuable if Hardaway or Sefolosha walks.

The names listed above don't offer much encouragement after a second disappointing season.

We've painted ourselves into a corner with no easy way out.

I hate Bud didn't trade Millsap. I hate Bud resigned Dennis. He should have waited until the summer, more cap space. I hate the Baze deal. Dwight isn't bad but paying 20+ mil for a guy who should be coming off the bench isn't a good look.

Hawks matches THJ's max deal.

Hawks resign Illyasova.

Thabo, Millsap, Humphries and Calderon walks.

Hawks sign Mack, Baynes and Jeff Green.

Hawks draft a PF and C.

I think they stealth tank next season.

It's not going to be pretty either way. Keep our FAs and we will have very little margin to improve. Let most of them walk and we're starting a rebuild with a rock bottom roster talent wise and mediocre pick.

This is what happens when you don't do what should have been done. Our last lateral move was to let Al walk, replaced with DH and a much more expensive Bazemore. DH has about a third of the value Horf had and Baze is now big negative

Sap was kept we lost the opportunity to trade our last "expendable" asset. Schro and the rooks are the others, but they are young.

Now Sap walks and we lose much more talent with less cap to replace him, or we keep him and he's the next Bazemore contract, but older.

So, which of these rosy senarios are they going to choose? i think that the dice have already been rolled. they are playing to WIN... the regular season with an increasing first round exit probability. It's going to get harder next year as we're on a downward trend due to talent, age and cap situation.

I don't think they can stealth rebuild now. If they let Sap walk fielding a lesser talented team, EVERYONE (except the last two fanboys) will know how bad things have gotten and chaanging course would be an indictment on past choices. Most already know we're there. the fact that they kept Sap for this feeble run tells me they have to keep him. They just can't change course now. So, who comes back next season for the continuation of the win now plan?

Signed: DH, Schro, Baze, Delaney, Prince, Bembry

Re-signed: Sap, THJr, Illyasova

Draft: two picks will get roster spots

Sign: $8.4 won't get us much and the rest of the roster filled with mininmum contracts

Next year we look like this:

DH / #19
Sap / Illya
Baze / Prince
THJr / FA / Bembry
Schro / Delaney / #31

with a couple min vets. Should still get a PO seed, but getting harder and maxed out going forward

My #1 Free Agent target is Gordon Hayward. But, by all accounts, the Hawks have almost no shot of obtaining him this summer.

As it stands, GH is expected to choose between the Jazz and Celtics this summer. (If he goes to BOSTON, and they keep that top-4 draft pick, that team would be in position to dominate this conference for the next decade.)

Anyway, here's a nice article on the emergence of Gordon Hayward as one of the most efficient 20 ppg scorers in the league. From The Ringer, the heir apparent to the Grantland.

Hayward made his first All-Star appearance this season, but his averages of 22.1 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 3.5 assists per game don’t scream stop what you’re doing and watch me.

February offered a glimpse of what Hayward could be: He scored 25.5 points on 18.1 shots per game (both career-highs for a month) with an effective field goal percentage of 58 (the third-most-efficient scoring month of his career).

Hayward scores 1.4 points per possession in transition, which leads the NBA...

[H]e tallies 1.04 points per possession in the half court, which ranks between Kyle Lowry and Stephen Curry
.

Hayward is after a title...The only realistic team with max cap space and a less treacherous road to the NBA Finals than the Jazz is the Celtics.

Gordon Hayward wrote:It comes down to where I can compete for a title. Where I live — that doesn’t affect me. The limelight doesn’t matter to me. I just want to make a run at it...

A guy I'd like to see us 'Buy Low': Bulls PF Nikola Mirotic.

The Bulls' Nikola Mirotic has gone from a potential starter in training camp to being inactive in March.

According to the 26-year-old forward, Chicago coach Fred Hoiberg told him he would not be playing in the near future.

"He told me that I'm out of the rotation," said Mirotic, who hasn't played in two games and was inactive for Sunday's matchup with the Celtics. "That I need to stay ready, but he didn't give me any expectation that I would [or] when I can play. Just 'stay ready.'

"I know that I'm ready. I know I can help those guys. Of course I've been inconsistent, not just me, all the team up and down -- but to be in this kind of situation, out of the rotation, doesn't make sense for me."

After a strong March in his rookie season, Mirotic was thought to be one of the best young players in the league, but a combination of injuries and inconsistency has derailed his promising start in Chicago.
ESPN

He's only a Restricted Free Agent this summer, but I'd put in a bid on him. Maybe even a sign and trade for his rights.

(This is another scenario where having Bebe or Edy Tavares as a minor trade chip could be a valuable option.)

They're trusting Millsap to do what Horford didn't do. If ATL didn't want to pay Horford a max starting at 26 mil a year, I highly doubt ATL would want to Millsap a max starting at 33 mil. Teams like DEN (his 2nd hometown), BK and PHI will offer him the max. This is his last big payday I highly doubt he'll take less to stay. There's no incentive. No 5 year max. This team won't win a championship with him if he stays. The team will be worst.

An underrated Free Agent target that won't break the bank:

Omri Casspi functioned as one of the league's most underrated commodities during the 2015-16 campaign...

Now an unrestricted free agent, the 28-year-old small forward did enough in 13 games with the 'Wolves to remind the world of his two-way value. His mistake-free play on defense and finishing ability around the hoop helped counteract his missing three-point stroke, which should come back during a larger sample of games in 2017-18.

He did not, however, do enough to earn himself a large payday. Some contender in need of additional spacing will inevitably snatch Casspi up on the cheap, then watch as his understated all-around play makes him a more valuable rotation piece than originally anticipated.
Bleacher Report

If we could pull Gallinari and Casspi to replace Millsap and THJ, I think they could prove useful complements to Dwight, Taurean and Dennis.

Reset, letting go, patience, and cap flexibility should be the Hawks #1 free agent target.

1) Hope that Milsap opts out and let him leave.
2) Renounce Hardaway and replace him with the 19th pick (Sindarius Thornwell or Luke Kennard)

4) Add shooting, rim protection and athleticism

Sign Anthony Randolph, Thomas Heurtel, Nicolo Melli, Derrick Brown, and Tyler Honeycutt.

5) In 2017 - 2018 build around what you have invested in: Schroder, Bazemore, and Howard.

Schroder/Heurtel
Bazemore/Thornwell or Kennard/Bembry
Brown/Prince/Honeycutt
Randolph/Melli
Howard/31st pick

Adding an experienced rim protecting goon from a cap strapped team like the Pelicans (on a salary dump would help also.

Getting Ajinca would be best. Asik would do the job.

Schroder/Heurtel
Bazemore/Thornwell or Kennard/Bembry
Brown/Prince/Honeycutt
Randolph/Melli
Howard/Asik/31st pick

This isn't what a Hawk fan would say. Sees Bulls. Yep, this is what I expected.

As for what we should do, it's too early to tell.

Clearly trading Dwight and Bazemore is at the top of the agenda.

Resigning Tim depending on his contract is as well.

Millsap is an option but we need to see what we can get for Dwight and/or Bazemore.

As for drafting, we like what we have in Bembry, Prince and Hardaway Jr. It's more than likely that we will look to drafting a big man but best player available is most likely.

The Hawks can be entertaining, cost effective, and competitive.

1) Howard and Bazemore have to be assigned and accept a role.

2) Schroder as a 6th man may actually be more useful.

3) They may not be able to cost effectively add 3 point shooting from the SG & SF position, but they can do it in front court.

Derrick Brown SF/PF/C (1987) - 44%, 37%, 42% (7'2.5 wingspan)
Anthony Randolph F/C (1989) - 39%, 34%, 39% (7'3" wingspan)
Nicolo Melli PF/SF/C (1990) - 32%, 44%, 39%
Thomas Heurtel PG (1989) - 40%, 40%, 40%

4) They can cost effectively upgrade defense, rebounding, passing, experience, and free three shooting% at the SG & SF.

Melli and Honeycutt are the top two rebounders in Euroleague
Thornwell is a great rebounding guard.

5) They can invert the court on offense by playing Derrick Brown and Anthony Randolph as stretch fives.
Randolph's best use is as a stretch 5.

6) Brown can do many of the things Draymond Green can do on offense and defense.

Heurtel/Schroder
Thornwell/Bazemore/Dembry
Prince/Honeycutt
Randolph/Melli/Brown
Howard/31st pick/FA (Christian Wood)

Schroder
Thornwell
Brown
Melli
Randolph
