I'm as interested to see what they do for the center spot as just about any position on the offense. If one can use Shanahan's recent history as a guide for what he's going to do with the play calls, more of it will fall on the center and not on the quarterback (thank God if they go young QB in THIS draft), so it's going to be very important to see what they think of the center spot this year.

One of my favorite attributes about Kilgore coming in was that he had the mentality and temperament I look for at the center spot but he was a developmental project from a technical and recognition standpoint so I'm not sure he'll be a fast pick up for the Shanahan offense, assuming it's similar at that spot to what he's favored in his recent past.

Not 100% convinced Zuttah is in the perfect mold for a Shanahan center but at least coming into the NFL, and the small bits I've seen so far, I could see, though I don't know for sure, Zuttah being a faster pick up on the Shanahan offense and being a better link initially for the others around him on that line right away than I would expect Kilgore to be.

Nick Mangold would be an interesting short term option. It might not be the easiest transition for him into a Shanahan offense after the career he's had but he's another guy whose temperament and mentality I like and I could see him being able to squeeze out and hold his own relatively OK if they do deem the center spot to be critical in this offense and need a stabilizing force until they can figure out what to do long-term. I'd especially be interested in this if they did go young at QB this year. A couple teams have asked Mangold to play guard already so it's possible he could be attracted to a situation where he wouldn't have to me, though playing for a definite contender at guard or center might trump any of that for him. I don't know.

Outside of that, I don't see a ton there in FA at C, in my opinion. A lot of older names and guys who are still developing and have struggled elsewhere.

Dontari Poe - DL - Free Agent

Free agent NT Dontari Poe left his Dolphins visit without a deal.

Poe and his agent very clearly overestimated his market worth. He has visited the Fins, Falcons, and Colts, and is expected to meet with the Raiders next. Poe has reportedly settled on asking for one-year offers in an effort to parlay a prove-it season into a bigger contract next offseason.

Redskins released Ricky Jean-Francois. Love that guy more so as a man than as a player, though I think he was underappreciated by some Niners fans I know while he was one. His time is probably coming to an end.

Dontari Poe - DL - Falcons

Falcons signed NT Dontari Poe, formerly of the Chiefs, to a one-year, $8 million contract.

Another $2 million is available through incentives. Poe picks the Falcons over Oakland, Miami, Indianapolis, and Jacksonville. Turning 27 this year, Poe was picked No. 11 overall in 2012 by the Chiefs when now-Falcons assistant GM was running the show in Kansas City. In Atlanta, Poe will replace another former Chiefs first-rounder Tyson Jackson, who was released last week. Poe's name has become bigger than his game, but he's still a solid addition up front. The Falcons will probably cut Poe's snaps a bit after he was nearly an every-down player in K.C. His back has been giving him trouble for years.

He's another one I overestimated in FA so far. Really did not think there'd be as much concern about him assuming the talk about the lack of scheme diversity is legit with these teams. Obviously salary demands is playing or one would believe is playing a part in this as well but I thought there'd be a quicker developing market for him and that does not seem to be the case if the reports are true.

I still really, really like him. He's one of my all-time favorite defenders from OSU. Had a blast watching him.

Nobody will probably care but Darius Butler is visiting the Redskins. Really liked that guy a lot at UConn but man, it feels like he's been in the league for 15 years. This would only be his 9th season and 4th different team assuming he doesn't do a 2nd stint with NE, CAR, or IND.

I'm still very disappointed of the fact that we didn't really make too much of an effort to acquire Poe:

Dontari Poe - DL - Falcons

Falcons DT Dontari Poe plans to play this season at 330 pounds.

It's 16-pounds lighter than his listed weight. Poe played nose tackle in Kansas City but is moving to three-technique in Atlanta's 4-3 scheme. The Falcons could reduced his every-down role with Derrick Shelby, Adrian Clayborn and Jack Crawford mixing in nickel packages. Playing at a lower weight should help with Poe's chronic back issues.

I always liked Patton, but over the past two years, he's seemingly been good for at least one bone-headed action every game. Frequently, these weren't necessarily "on the field" things as such (penalties after the whistle, etc.), but he's not a guy who has the kind of talent to overcome that if he doesn't get his head on straight. I thought he could be a pretty nice #3 or even #2 receiver, and maybe he still will somewhere, but he's got to get a handle on his emotions.
