Trent Taylor - WR - 49ers

49ers rookie WR Trent Taylor stood out at OTAs/minicamp.

Taylor has reportedly been "very good at separating" from defenders. Jeremy Kerley is ahead of Taylor for slot duties, but doesn’t have any guaranteed money beyond this season. Taylor should open 2017 on punt returns.

Taylor looks like he might replace Ellington on the roster who can't stay healthy anyway

DeForest Buckner - DL - 49ers

49ers LE DeForest Buckner said he was "dead tired" at times as a rookie.

Buckner played 1,006 snaps, a number only topped by Olivier Vernon among defensive linemen, but he should get more rest this season. "When you look at a guy like Buckner last year having played almost 1,000 snaps -- in my mind, that's criminal," new DC Robert Saleh said. "Ideally, all of them are working about 500, 600 snaps and trying to utilize everything they've got every snap." Buckner said there were times he felt he was "hurting" the team because he was so drained, so the snaps off should be a welcome sight.

Arik Armstead - DL - 49ers

The Santa Rosa Press Democrat questions whether RE Arik Armstead will play on passing downs this season.

Beat writer Grant Cohn suggests Armstead could get subbed out in passing situations for Ahmad Brooks and/or Elvis Dumervil, effectively limiting Armstead to an early-down, run-stuffer role. DeForest Buckner and Solomon Thomas are expected to be San Francisco's defensive tackles in sub-packages. Under the Trent Baalke regime, Armstead was picked 17th overall in the 2015 draft.

Ellington has been so frustrating. I liked the pick, and I think the talent is there, but the guy just cannot stay healthy. He had a golden opportunity last year, and just couldn't capitalize.

For one reason or another Ellington was never incorporated into the offense. His constant injuries were at least part to blame. Never thought much of him on Special Teams. He seemed reliable returning punts but wasn't elusive and never seemed to be able to make a big play like Ted Ginn or Tyler Lockett

George Kittle - TE - 49ers

The Sacramento Bee considers fifth-round TE George Kittle the likeliest tight end to make the 49ers' roster.

In other words, all of the other 49ers tight ends are on the bubble with 3-4 roster spots open. Trent Baalke draft picks Blake Bell and Vance McDonald are in especially big danger of getting cut. Kittle gobbled up first-team reps at minicamp, and beat writers think he's a legitimate candidate to start.

Grant Cohn stated Vance McDonald is buried with the 2nd and 3rd string teams and he is still dropping balls in practice

Exciting to go into the season with one of the top offensive minds in the NFL today especially after having such a long period of inept offenses with such few bright spots.

Carlos Hyde - RB - 49ers

CSN Bay Area believes Carlos Hyde will have to compete for the 49ers' starting job.

Longtime beat writer Matt Maiocco has seen what everybody else has, reasoning Hyde's injury history, contract status and unfamiliarity with new coach Kyle Shanahan's system has him on the defensive. Maiocco also believes it's noteworthy how hard Shanahan went after fourth-rounder Joe Williams in the draft. Maiocco expects a committee to develop even if Hyde is christened "starter." Tim Hightower is in the mix with Hyde and Williams.

Brian Hoyer - QB - 49ers

Brian Hoyer is hosting a passing camp for his 49ers teammates this week in Dallas.

Players from many teams hold these kinds of events between minicamp and training camp, but it is notable for a team trying to learn new coach Kyle Shanahan's offense, especially since Hoyer has played for Shanahan in the past and can help along the transition. No. 1 receiver Pierre Garcon is not attending, but every other notable pass catcher is participating.

It's tough to get too worked up about low national expectations for this team, but this surprised me:

https://www.profootballfocus.com/news/pro-ranking-all-32-teams-front-seven-units-headed-into-the-2017-season

32nd? I realize our run D was historically bad last year, and our pass rush wasn't much better, but come on. We lost our starting NT before the season even began. We lost both starting ILBs by week four. Our starting OLB/DE missed the first four weeks. Our starting DE was playing hurt before he missed half the season.

Since last season ended, we added a new NT, are returning an All Pro who missed 12 games, and brought in two top-5 talents in the draft. The front-seven will be completely overhauled. I'm not expecting them to turn into the Seahawks, by any means. But I certainly expect them to be better than the Colts and Saints.
