Craig Smith

Post#1 » by Vuchato » Sat Jul 10, 2010 2:31 am

The Nets need a PF. After missing out on Bosh, Boozer, Amare, Lee, and even Tyrus and apparently Haslem, there aren't too many guys left. There is one guy still out there, who's young, tough, and a very efficient scorer. Craig Smith would be a great player to split time at the 4 with Favors this year, and be a good backup as Favors develops. There has been no rumored interest by the Nets in him, but if you think he should be brought in, send him a tweet, @Csmeezy5 and show him that he should talk to the Nets, that we want him in Jersey next year.

Interesting idea.
Wouldn't be a bad pickup if he came cheap, but if you have to overpay him he becomes a bad contract to the tune of Jason Maxiel his 2nd year.

I'm also interested, curious how much it would take...

I'd rather have Smith for Petro's money than Petro for Petro's money. He can produce. One year deal to get the team over the minimum cap number? I'd love that.

I would rather have Smith then Petro as well. The question now, is Smith better the Humph? If he is, the yeah, bring him and let him start, if not, there is no point.

I still remember his 2nd game in the NBA when he put up 20 points in 16 minutes. What you need is a frontcourt player that draws attention - check - and some perimeter slashers that can dump off the ball - check. He also has some iso driving ability from the free throw line area. Not just a first step move either, he also likes to drop the ball down, hesitate, and crossover to the left for layup. If the scouting reports are on and he's getting checked by veterans, he can get slowed down, but there's too much fresh meat in the league. So he'll stay productive. Anyways, you should sign him

Sign Craig Smith or Victor Kryapa. Both are solid and cheap for what they can provide. Then try to swing a deal or two and hope for the best. If not, see if Avery can get anything out of these guys and, if not, pray we luck out in the lottery next year.

Didnt we discuss Smith in the PF thread already? He is fine...as long as its only one year guaranteed. He can have a team option year but that's it.

Dont care who we add really for that spot. I expect a contract no longer than this. Rhino is fine.

Prediction if Rod is still involved at all: DIOGU

Can someone explain to me why Diogu has gotten such a raw deal in the NBA? I was a fan of him coming out of college (although I wasn't uber high of him at our pick that year I'll admit). Every time I see that kid get minutes I think he's pretty efficient on offense, isn't worthless on defense and doesn't seem to be a blackhole in any capacity, yet he's bounced around the league as much as Drew Gooden (who is funny but I would HATE to ever see him on our team...thank God the Bucks overpaid for him).

I honestly don't get it to tell you the truth.

Wow, I'd love Diogu. I wanted him at 15 so badly that year. Once it became clear he wasn't falling then I desperately wanted Granger. Yikes. What a bad pick Wright was.

I heard Diogu is coming off microfracture, or maybe ACL injury

Whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa buddy...there is 1 MASSIVELY MASSIVE different between Craig Smith and Chris Wilcox.

That difference is cost. While Wilcox has gotten overpaid by rediculous amounts over the years, Craig Smith could be had at the equivalent of circus peanuts. In that respect, Craig Smith is an ABSOLUTE STEAL. We are at the point where we need another big on the cheap (in terms of contract length and $ amount). You can't find 3-4 guys UFAs that has his kind of skill that could be had for as cheap. Victor Kryapa is the only player I can come up with. Unless a trade comes our way to net a quality big man, this is reality.

So basically, prove me wrong or chill out because we're not talking about giving this kid $10 mill a year.

You're missing the point I was making Prelude, for years Nets fans thought Stromile Swift or Chris Wilcox would be their savior and year after year they'd clamor for one of the two... I hope that this Craig Smith obsession doesn't develop into something like that for this fanbase.

Except noone is looking at Craig Smith as a savior but instead just a guy that can TEMPORARILY fill a huge hole on the team and would cost peanuts.

Not really getting this sudden Craig Smith obsession all of you seem to have. He's solid, but he's hardly a must have type player. Just give Outlaw, james, humphries and Favors all the minutes at the 4. I rather just stick with the current team we have and leave enough cap space in case a Chris Paul deal surfaces and we have to take back Okafor.

Seems to me he never really got the opportunity. Whenever he plays significant minutes in a game he seems to play well...and put up some big numbers. I remember the last 5 games of the season with the Kings in 2009 he got some run and averaged 20 and 8. Dude doesnt miss either. Undersized...and issues guarding other bigs were always his obstacle. A shame.

As Speedy said...he had microrfracture surgery early January. SO its been a full 6 months now. BTW...while everyone knows I loved him on draft day and was my top target that night (didnt fall to us) I wasnt saying...he is the best target out there or anything. I was just having fun in a Rod Thorn kind of thininking that hey who has Rod liked inthe past that he has tried to get who I can see as a big man prospect to take a 1 year flyer on. And I came up with IKE. Odds arent good he ever does anything in the league at this stage. The injury may have been the last thing he needed wth him alredy struggling to get minutes.

But I'd take a 1 year flyer if he passes a physical.
