10-11 Clutch Stats - Last 30/10 seconds

Post#1 » by Imadogg » Thu Mar 10, 2011 11:19 am

If you haven't seen my other "clutch" thread, check it out: viewtopic.php?f=64&t=1098943

I decided to look up the stats of a few other guys for just this season. And not just last 10 second stats, but also the last 30 seconds.. you can decide what to make of this and how to compare.

Remember, clutch here is "Field Goals in the last [10 or 30] seconds of 4th qtr or OT, with the player's team tied or down 1-3pts (within one FG)".

Last 10 seconds:
Carmelo Anthony - 4-6 (66.7%)
Kobe Bryant - 1-3 (33.3%)
Kevin Durant - 2-8 (25%)
Lebron James - 1-8 (12.5%)
Dirk Nowitzki - 3-4 (75%)
Paul Pierce - 1-3 (33.3%)
Dwyane Wade - 0-4 (0%)

Last 30 seconds:
Carmelo Anthony - 4-6 (66.7%)
Kobe Bryant - 2-5 (40%)
Kevin Durant - 2-11 (18.2%)
Lebron James - 2-9 (22.2%)
Dirk Nowitzki - 4-6 (66.7%)
Paul Pierce - 1-4 (25%)
Dwyane Wade - 1-8 (12.5%)

So there you have it. Out of these players, known for their clutch, Dirk reigns supreme this season (so far).

So your clutch stats don't reveal whose actually clutch.

Good effort!

I don't know if you're saying these stats don't = clutch, Dirk is obviously clutch, or you disagree with Dirk being clutch.

Is this even accurate?
Dirk missed a last second shot against NO last night.

Which prompted this in the MVP discussion thread:

DIRK COST THE MAVS AND CHOKED AGAIN TODAY,

Dirk and Mavs are chokers. I wish i was wrong as i like mark cuban and the players however they choke all the time.

Dirk is the perfect number 2.

I have to look through (not literally) millions of play-by-plays... not gonna look up Millsap lol

Picked some stars known for "clutch" and this is what I found

Dirk is as clutch as Karl Malone.

Dirk is pretty damn clutch when you consider regular season stats

This is his only game winner this year though:

Dude, don't be a jerk. Guy put some effort into this, he doesn't deserve your sarcastic dismissal.

Beyond that, while the sample size here is too small to claim huge authority, the reason people almost always give for why they know a player is clutch is that they make the shots the OP tracked. Which means that if people then refuse to acknowledge studies along these when they disagree with their pre-existing opinion, these people's opinion probably wasn't based on anything real anyway.

People base clutchness based on how many people actually viewed the shot and on selective memory. Dirk being rated the highest means you need better methodology to determine clutchness.

interesting stats, that alone doesnt tell if someone is cluth or not though imo. One has to define what clutch is first before anyone can try and analyze who is the most clutch. Is it game winners or buzzer beaters? Go ahead shots in the final minute? final 30 seconds? final 10 seconds? Making a shot in the final seconds of a game could be pretty insignificant in some situations.

Just looking at a raw percentage isn't good enough. You have to consider the situation (playoff berths on the line? win streak on the line?) as well as the flow of the game.

No Millsap = thread fail.

Just kidding dude. Clutchness seems damn near impossible to track with stats. Lots of factors, broken plays, poorly designed plays, and probably some more I can't think of right now.

Imma - these are great, but I think you really need to include FT's and 3 pta (and ideally, assists). Overlooking the most efficient way a player can score (by getting to the line) and lumping the least efficiently converted shots (3 pta) in a small sample could really change things.

This is a joke of a post. 'Determining clutchness is hard because of selective memory, so you're stats are wrong because I know in my heart that Dirk isn't clutch.'

Every methodology that tries to measure clutchness seems to rate Dirk highly over the last few years. And my own opinion from watching every Mavs game backs it up.

I will say though, when Dirk fails in the clutch it usually has to do with getting set up. Like he ends up in a bad position and turns the ball over. But when he has the ball and posts up in the mid-range, he's money.

FT attempts/made should also be included considering getting fouled doesn't count as a shot attempt.
