I don't understand what you're trying to say.
The reason I (and many, many others for many years among fans, media, teams etc) define position by who you defend instead of offensive skillset is because it's more coherent and consistent. For example, a "2" is more often the 2nd smallest, 2nd fastest player in his 5 man unit unit, and more often defending the opposing 2nd smallest, 2nd fastest player than he is the primary "shooter" (which is why I always say "2" instead of "shooting guard"). "Point" is an offensive skillset/role that can be performed from any of the 5 positions. This isn't an exact science and there is a lot of overlap, but there is a reason that you will much, much more often see a "3 point guard" unit (say Coby, Giddey and Ball or Ayo) than you'll see a Unit where 3 of the players are 6'-1". It's because defensive liabilities are much more restrictive to team success than offensive skillset redundancies are.
As for Giddey, he'll be a "Point(offense)-3(defense)" more often than anything else that could be coherently described. So I will call him a three instead of a point guard. Because for example, if he's on the floor with ball and Kobe, he will more often be guarding the opposing three than he will be playing point on offense in my estimation. But there will be plenty of overlap for both.
Again, semantics because I the whole size thing does come into play, but I'm saying that Giddey will guard the worst defensive player (1-3, maybe 1-4) hence his defensive "position" is "worst player guarder".
Staying on Giddey, I remember his presser comments at least recognizing that he's not a good defender. Although his comments suggested that his goal wasn't to become an actual good defender, he just didn't want to be the guy that other teams attacked as the weakest link. Sorta like, I don't need to outrun the bear, I just need to out defend Coby.
Ok I understand. I just disagree on the frequency with which Giddey will guard the opposing worst player. I think he will almost never guard the opposing 1, and pretty rarely the opposing 2. He'll be guarding the offensively-worst opposing 3 or 4 most of the time IMO. But again, there's plenty of overlap, and I agree it's semantics, but it causes confusion when people are referring to different things so I was just trying to clarify.
So I see the positional battles differently than you do. We have some guys that can defend like four positions and others who can only defend one, and even one who can't defend a chair lol. So I see the main battles for non entitlement minutes (of which there will and should be many in our circumstances) more like this:
These guys will mostly get entitlement minutes and mostly at the (defensive) positions I indicate:
Patrick (4 and 3)
Zach (2 and maybe 3)
Coby (1 and maybe 2)
Then the rest will compete for mostly these partial roles:
5: Smith vs Vuc (though I wouldn't mind a little Sanogo lol)
4: Matas vs Craig vs Phillips vs Giddey vs Smith
3: Giddey vs Ayo vs Terry vs Ball
2: Ayo mostly, maybe some Ball, Duarte or Coby
1: Ball vs Ayo vs Carter
