Bulls Defense

Post#1 » by ScrantonBulls » Tue Oct 28, 2025 2:59 pm

To preface this, it is still too early and these numbers mean VERY little. Sample size is way too small. But as of now, the Bulls are ranked third in defensive rating. 4th in opponents PPG. They're 21st in offensive rating.

Who do you attribute the Bulls solid defense these initial games? Most importantly, is there any way the Bulls can stay a good defensive team with Vuc being our main center? Vuc and Giddey will play major minutes, and neither are known for being good defenders. We'll need some strong efforts from guys like Ayo, Okoro, and Pat to cover for them. I haven't watched enough Matas to know how he grades out defensively.

We have a number of good defenders on this team.

It's kind of amazing to see Vuc try a bit on defense which he has done rather well these first 3 games. It's the best he's ever played for us and absolutely acceptable D with that offensive game for like an MLE guy. Is it possible that Vuc will have a Brook Lopez-esque late career peak? Brook was a pretty poor defender until into his 30s IMO.

Under Billy, they've tried to limit opponent scoring from the most efficient sources. Transition, offensive rebounds, they don't foul a lot either. The team doesn't have any elite defenders, but they have solid, capable ones who play hard.

The other half of this is luck. Opponents are shooting 26% from 3 against the Bulls, which is unsustainable. They give up the most shots at the rim, and don't force TOs. They've turned the ball over a lot as well. Opponents are scoring less than they should against them if you look at opponent shot quality.

We should save this thread 'til we're at least 10 games in. Preferably 15 or 20.

Not sure how much quality discussion or analysis can be made with a 3 game sample size.

Game 1 I will point out, we were very lucky an elite shooter like Duncan Robinson shot 1 of 7. That might have been a fluke or it might have been because of our defense. Too many unverifiable things like that in such a small sample size.

We won't know until we've played more games, but the early returns are encouraging.
