I haven't given much thought yet to extensions for anyone other than Coby and Ayo. Huerter ain't cheap. He's making $17 million this year from a contract signed well before the recent $$ explosion. And he was playing 29 MPG when he signed that deal and is playing 26-27 MPG since coming to the Bulls. I have no clue how to predict his next deal. Especially if he's viewed as a 6 MOY candidate on a team that performed unexpectedly well. And he's only 27.
We can't keep all these guys. This 10 man style we are playing might continue as a long term strategy, but it can't be maintained with all these same dudes. We can't pay them.
But like Tre Jones, Huerter is a gamer. Everyone saying he's more than a shooter is spot on. He's got a handle, makes the right reads, has nice vision and despite perceptions is a solid defender. He's a winner.
I would likely pay Huerter 20+ mil before I would give it to Coby. All of the preceding comments in this thread just give me more reason to think the Bulls need to trade Coby at the deadline to obtain a long term big; either through direct trade package or draft pick.
I like Coby and I think he improves this team. But its entirely possible you can sign both Ayo and Huerter for what it will cost to pay Coby. And we need a center more than we need Coby. Especially if we have Huerter, Ayo, Tre and Giddey already in place as guards.
I'm keeping an open mind. We haven't even seen him yet this year. But I've been wondering since last year, even with Coby balling out, if it made the most sense to keep him.
I think we need a defensive-minded center more than we need Coby White. If someone like Kessler or Clingan were suddenly available for Coby, I would happily do the trade-- especially since we have Huerter and Ayo to hold things down. That said, we haven't been tested yet this season. Right now, our running and ball-movement is defeating teams. Eventually, defenses will gameplan for that better and we'll need someone who can individually break down defenses and score. Coby's the player most suited to do that on this roster.
