CHSN is broadcast free OTA in the Chicago area, but I can't tune it in on my LG tv. LG tv's do not have an ATSC3.0 (now known as NextGen TV) tuner, so I can't pick it up.

Does anyone have any success with an ATSC3.0 tuner device that plugs into the tv's HDMI port which would allow me to watch the games? Not interested in DVR, just would like to watch.

I'm pretty sure that was only last season and they've done away with the free OTA in the Chicago area. I have an antenna and CHSN no longer even appears, it's some other channel, but it worked last season.

I'm now paying $20 a month to watch via the CHSN app. I believe this is the only legal way other than League Pass (for those out of the area) and one of the cable providers offer CHSN in one of their higher tier packages (for those in the area).

The other legal option is a streamer - DirectTV Stream or Fubo. We ended up moving from YTTV to DirectTV for this. I guess you can also do this via DirectTV satellite service if anyone still bothers with that sort of thing these days.

FYI - I wrote my post right after reading this right off the CHSN FAQ page. According to this, OTA in Chicago should be available after sunset:

Can I still watch CHSN via OTA?
It depends where you are viewing from. Certain markets will remain active, while others will sunset effective Monday, June 9, 2025:

Milwaukee, WI
Grand Rapids, MI

Pad/Cape/Harrisburg
Cedar Rapids, IA
Sioux City, IA

Sunsetting
Chicago, IL
Champaign Springfield, IL
South Bend, IN
Davenport, IA
Ft Wayne, IN

By sunsetting they don't mean "only available after sunset", they mean getting rid of it entirely in those areas.

It's only still available OTA for free in:
Indianapolis, IN
Milwaukee, WI
Grand Rapids, MI
Des Moines, IA
Pad/Cape/Harrisburg
Cedar Rapids, IA
Sioux City, IA

If you only need live TV, IPTV is the way to go though a legally grey area.

For the life of me I couldn't figure out what they meant by sunsetting... Now that I read your explanation it makes total sense, and also explains why I have no access to the OTA broadcast.

I guess it's time to figure out which streaming service I want to pay for.

Yeah, I do have it set up, but there is enough friction that I enjoy the CHSN app for every game they're on CHSN and use the IPTV for odd ball national games / playoffs / league pass / random sports I would normally never pay for and barely use but now have access to (NFL sunday ticket etc..)

I'm cool with the CHSN app for now. I think $20/month is fair to watch the Bulls. Unclear to me how many games I'll potentially miss like national broadcasts and/or playoffs. The OTA is totally gone right?

It’s totally gone in Chicagoland. It’s still around in some other midwestern markets.

Could you explain how IPTV works? I've done some googling but still don't completely understand it. The prices look really affordable though. I'm seeing that some IPTV subscriptions include things on netflix and Hulu?

Effectively, it is a streaming service out of somewhere like China where they aggregate every TV channel in existence and offer it to you for like $30-$50 per screen for a year (ie barely nothing). To get it to work well you then need to get an app that can play the streams, TiviMate is the most popular one, but it won't work on a roku (it's hard to get anything to work on a roku without sideloading), so you need a google TV or Amazon Firestick to install it.

Typically these IPTV stations have like 10,000+ channels, Ie you have multiple feeds for every game in existence. They also usually have VOD for 10000+ movies/tv shows. The companies often go up and down and they can be good for awhile but then eventually have too many people on them and start buffering. I've had pretty good luck though.

Effectively you can think illegal streaming, except you can easily play it on your main TV with a guide, and it's probably not technically illegal in the origin country because they may not need to respect US copyright laws legally where they are and aren't subject to US laws.
