I think Paxson learned his lesson with this. Just because someone else overpaid, it doesn't mean that you have to. I think the Bulls should have played super hardball, Varejao style.

Let's say we did that, do you think we'd really be any further ahead if we did that? What would have changed?

Chandler would have taken the QO and walked away as a UFA rather than being traded for PJ Brown. If you think the contract was a mistake then getting PJ Brown and 2nd rounders for Chandler to get out of it is still better than not signing him at all.

I think he could have been retained for less. Remember, he signed in August, which was much earlier than Paxson did anything afterwards.

If he signs for less, later on, Chicago would have been more willing to keep him. If they keep him, no Ben Wallace.

How much less? Less enough that you think we'd have kept him rather than traded him? I don't think so. I don't think he'd have signed for much less to be honest, no matter how long we waited. 2 worse players got 60 million, so I just don't see how you were going to get him for a whole lot less. Could we have possibly gotten him for 60? Maybe. 55? I really, really doubt it. At 55, I still think we would have dumped him as well.

Anyway, it's a minor point, in general, I would agree that perhaps we didn't negotiate on that deal as well as we could have, but I don't think that Chandler would be here if the negotiations somehow went differently and landed us Chandler at a slightly lower price.
