I agree a lot with Bullsville. People are making too much of positions.

Most players outside of true PGs and true Cs flop between 2 other positions whether they are 1/2s, 2/3s, 3/4s, or 4/5s. The primary things you need to watch out for are:
1) Having the skills of the 5 players on the floor complement each other
2) The 5 guys on the floor can match up on both ends with the opposing 5.
3) Everyone know their role in the current lineup.

[quote="Bullsville"]-

I'm talking on average (in terms of roles for position), there are always exceptions.

MJ usually led the Bulls in assists, especially early in his career. Shouldn't a PG lead the team in assists?

True, but Jordan, like any superstar, had the ball in his hands a lot, and got doubled (even tripled-teamed), which allows for the most assist opportunities. The old bulls didn't really have a true point guard. Harper was a slasher/defender, and BJ and Paxson were shooters. But we had Pippen at point forward (atypical).

Bruce Bowen? Raja Bell? The 1993-94 Bulls, who had Pete Myers as their SG? No scorers here.

Agreed, you can have role and/or speciality players play any position. And many times "the stoppers" play the 2 or the 3 b/c there are so many great 2/3 scorers.

A small forward is essentially the same player as the 2, they are both wings. Ideally the SF is slightly bigger than a SG, but their roles are the same, score.

Dennis Rodman played SF almost exclusively for the Bad Boys, and he wasn't much of a scorer. But he used to make Scottie his bitch back in the day.

Rodman is a speciality player as well. These types are best on a team with true stars. Why Wallace shouldn't be on the Bulls.

In todays NBA the 4 and 5 are interchangable, with the 4 being more fleet of foot, and the 5 being more defensive minded and bigger.

My point exactly.

And the fact that Jordan had the skillset, size and footspeed, for both positions, which is a big ask, allowed us to get away with non-ball-handling, sharpshooting PG's who were available by the dozen in the late-first/2nd round, a la Paxson, BJ, Kerr, specifically because they lacked those ball-handling skills.

Had we put a PG on the team who needed to dominate the ball to be effective, like a young Gary Payton, I don't think it would have worked.

What we gained from Jordan we could afford to lose in other areas. It was still a zero sum game that seems, even today, largely based on starting with position definitions that are quite close to what Gregnice33 described earlier in the thread.

I don't think it's nearly as haphazard as the current Bulls team culture would lead you to believe.

Kirk (SG), Nocioni(PF) and Ben(C), the players we have, ironically, paid the most, are all well undersized for the positions we most heavily rely on them to play compared to most other players who play that same position.
