Why is Duhon Considered Best PG on team?

Post#1 » by girlygirl » Thu Jan 17, 2008 5:12 pm

For years now, I've heard and read that Duhon is the only PG on the team, that he's a much better playmaker than Gordon and Hinrich, blahblahblah.

I'm sorry, but I don't see anything that suggests he's much better than either Kirk or BG at setting up his teammates. Well, let me take that back..I do see two things that he might do better, or at least more often, than Kirk and/or BG. One is driving to the basket with the intent of either trying to dish the ball to one of the big men for a layup or taking to the rim himself. And I certainly can't blame him if the teammate misses the shot. Secondly, he is better at throwing the alley-oop/lob passes, although he doesn't do it nearly enough to make it a weapon in the team's offense. But most of the time he does the same thing Kirk and BG do, which is make a simple pass to a teammate, usually on the perimeter, or run the P/R with one of the big men. And, like Kirk and BG he overdribbles a lot at times. He is less turnover prone, but I wonder if that's simply because he is afraid to make the high risk/high reward type of play. He's definitely not a very creative playmaker nor is he good at breaking down defenses off the dribble.

Statswise, he is worse than Kirk at piling up assists. See below:

Duhon this season:

APG 3.8
A/40 Min 6.8
A/48 Min 8.0

Hinrich this season:

APG 6.1
A/40 Min 7.3
A/48 Min 8.7

Gordon this season:

APG 2.8
A/40 Min 3.2
A/48 Min 3.8

In summary, this post is meant simply to find someone to explain to me exactly why Duhon is considered the team's best playmaker/PG. Because I don't see it when he's on the court, and the stats certainly don't back the argument.

If some of you want to help me out with what you see in Duhon that might make him the best PG on the team, things that I may simply be overlooking, I'd appreciate it. Because right now I am having a hard time understanding why he gets so much playing time.

you answered your own question

he doesnt turn it over

he keeps the offense moving

he makes good passes

him and kirk arent far off. kirk is better when he can score and he tends to dribble in one spot for too long. but they are very similar.

Well, nobody guards duhon so duhon has far more space to make the passes than Hinrich and for Gordon - it's even worse coz he gets double teams almost every time he touches the ball at the top of the key.

So Duhon doesn't turn it over much coz he has no pressure on the ball.
