The Wizards game tomorrow is an absolute must-win. No excuses for that one. Worst team in the league.

Why can’t people accept this core has one of the lowest defensive ceilings in the league? They are pathetically unathletic and short-armed, with the exception of you know who (3 vet bench amigos aside).
You make them guard the perimeter more aggressively and there’s no chance in hell Lauri and Zach have 65% TS with the minutes they’re playing.
The low-motor defense is enabling the offense, which is what we wanted. We weren’t gonna turn into the 14/15 Warriors, who had an entire roster of athletic/tall plus-defenders, including their ball-boy.
+100
Our current core has very little defensive upside. GarPax really dropped the ball on their last rebuild.
PWill has quite a lot of defensive upside. We thought Carter did (and still may). Zach can play decently when he's tuned in. It's Lauri and Coby that are weak links, esp. Lauri because he's just not that quick. Coby ought to be able to defend with his quickness, even with his short arms. I can't really blame GarPax- you can't draft only for defense or else you turn into a team that has to win games 95-90 all the time. And we were so bad offensively for awhile that I can't blame them for taking an offense talent like Coby, either.
garpax should have learned that lesson w/ mcdermott

if beal gets in, that makes it harder for lavine to get in, not easier. lavine has been the more effective scorer

Indeed. But of course Beal will get in because the media is pushing this "free beal" narrative and fans are eating it up

Beal is getting in due to fan vote so raw #s will work for him. Lavine only has a chance through wildcard which is determined by coaches, so more subtle factors like his high TS% are going to be notable. 64.5% TS is no joke for someone scoring 27 ppg. Tatum is at 57%.

Re: Around the NBA: 2020-21 Season
I find it funny that Knicks fans are already irritated with Thibs.
Thibs is trying to win every single game at all costs. He is going to ride with veterans to get it done. Thats how he has always done it.
Billy basically is the complete opposite in how he is handling our roster. The young guys are playing and doing the most out of it. The vets are helping as a complimentary, not a primary.
In my opinion if Billy coached the Knicks, he would probably start Quickley, Barrett, Toppin,Robinson and Randle.
I get the frustration though from them. You would rather improve and get to the playoffs on the backs of the young guys. Not veterans like Elfrid, Taj, DRose, Bullock etc

bringing jimmy along slowly probably helped him. bringing mcdermott along slowly might have hampered him. guess it depends on the makeup of the young knicks players as to what thibs should be doing

Rose to the Knicks for DSJ and a 2021 2nd Rd pick. It's official.

My guess is that Jimmy would always be Jimmy and Dougie always Dougie, no matter how their coaches were during their rookie seasons and how much they played.
Butler as a rookie defended well, didn't foul, didn't make turnovers, and got to the FT line at will. Over the years he has improved his handle and passing tremendously, and he shoots more often, but those changes clearly came from him working on his game, not any coach. As for Doug, he was a flat-out bad player in Year 1, but Year 2 he was the player he is now -- basically, a 3-point shooter, with some rebounding, few turnovers, and very few assists.
Occasionally a coach and player really click, or really don't, but mostly guys become who they will become regardless of the coach or organization. Phil Jackson, Tex Winter, Johnny Bach, and the great Nineties Bulls organization couldn't save Stacey King, because Stacey just wasn't going to become a real NBA player, no matter who was around him. That was just what it was.

Stacey never worked on his body. He refused to. This was all

Beal is number one scorer in Nba 35 ppg. Beal was and is still better player than Lavine and has higher trade value.Clocian wrote:dice wrote:Clocian wrote:Watching this wiz game. mcdermott came into the league w/ an all-around offensive game. he wasn't pegged as a 3 pt specialist. but he found himself with a team expecting to contend and got limited minutes, reducing him to a role player. zach lavine, on the other hand, has gotten plenty of minutes from day one and has continued to progress
as for jimmy, he's had very positive things to say about thibs regarding his development
you're probably correct in the end, but there's a certain percentage of guys whose careers could go in a variety of directions depending on the situation they find themselves in. tom brady is another example. he has said that if he hadn't gotten an early opportunity due to injury and gotten paired with belichick, he has no idea how his career would have turned out

beal may be better all-around w/ higher trade value, but zach's been a more effective scorer. no doubt in my mind about that

If the Bulls do, you would be complaining to much to ever hear it.
NBA fan logic we need to trade one of two best players because (Player X) one needs to shine more.
