If the Bulls didn't get non-guaranteed years at the end of the deal, they're horrible GMs if they had to guarantee his first two years to do it.

Normally I would agree, but in this day & age where Tyler Johnson gets $50M long term, I'd say locking in a rookie to a 2nd rounder scale for multiple years might be a good GM move.

The Sam Hinkie maneuver gave the Sixers some ridiculous contracts by today's standards.

Robert Covington 13 ppg 6.3 rpg 2.5 3PM per game
Allan Crabbe 10.3 ppg 2.7 rpg 1.4 3PM per game

Covington $1.0M to $1.08M per year for 4 years.
Crabbe: $19M per year for 4 years

OTOH, Hinkie pissed off agents by doing this.

If there's a non-zero chance that Zipser could play at Covington's level, I'd say go ahead and lock him in for a few years by guaranteeing 2.

It will be interesting to see how it ended up. I suspect that Zipser and his agent did not want to tie Zipser up for four years, and thus the compromise was to scale the deal back to two years guaranteed and nothing more. This would give the Bulls Early Bird rights in case Zipser proves to be someone worth keeping.

I'm sure it's already been mentioned in the 7 pages but Asik _was_ a RFA. The mistake was that the Bulls only signed him for 2 years out of the gate instead of 3.

So they're setting themselves up for the same thing to happen again unless there's an option year.

It has been mentioned - it's also been mentioned that in Asik's case he had a tremendous amount of leverage to walk away from the deal if the Bulls tried to force years on him. Asik was well-compensated in Turkey and already had an offer on the table from his club team. There was no reason for him to take a 'bad deal' from Chicago

Asik was a RFA - so they had the opportunity to retain him if they wanted.

Asik wasn't a 'poison pill' contract, it was the 'Arenas Provision'.

Asik was a two year because that's what he negotiated. Asik had leverage because he was paid very well over in Europe and was successful and happy. The Bulls needed him and were willing to make the deal.

The Bulls have to weigh the likelihood of a second rounder ever coming close to earning the MLE against the possible risk of carrying guaranteed dollars for 3+ years for a player who may not even last the season for you.

Felicio is two years because he was signed using the Minimum Salary exception - and it has a max of two years. I believe most second round picks and undrafted FA's are signed using the Minimum Salary exception, though according to Coon teams will occasionally use a part of the MLE to sign 2nd round picks so as to insure full Bird rights.
