Re: Bulls Free Agency - Merged
Not that he really gives any insight to what the FO is actually doing, but KC Johnson pretty much said we're not going after anybody in free agency. Just resign Lavine and Nwaba. He said we will be running a line up of Dunn/Lavine/Holliday/Markkanen/Lopez through at least all star break. Super conservative, very boring. That's our FO. If there's one thing I liked about 2016-2017 and their weird hobbled monster team with Wade and Rondo, at least they did something out of the ordinary.
I also feel kinda bad because I alluded to KC kissing the ground the FO walks on and towing the company line at the expense of reporting over twitter, and he privately messaged me to defend himself. I mean not in like a defensive and mean way, but like "Awww, no come on! I swear I care about journalistic integrity!" I guess he has time on his hands to read comments since it's summer.

I'll put my eggs in the Lance Stephenson 1 + 1 team option deal. Not for growth, strictly for entertainment. His 2017-2018 highlights were entertaining af. But if I'd be ok with Marcus Smart if they have their eyes on a big fish next summer to make us a win-now competitive team.

I have a hard time buying that we are NOT going to start Carter...

why? That was same plan for Lauri at training camp last year. Even after Eurobasket performance. He would have being 3rd stringer last year if not for a punch. Dont kid yourself. This franchise sucks when it comes evaluating talent. They can only get luck into it. To me personally that punch was almost equal to 1.8% chance of winning lottery.

Well, Niko and Bobby don't suck so it kinda makes sense that Lauri wouldn't start. We just got lucky they got into a fight and Lauri is as good as he is. We have Rolo and...nobody. We aren't going to play Felicio in front of Carter and I don't ever expect Asik to see the floor...

We still have pretty much deep frontcourt. Lauri is best player on this team and he should get major minutes. Bobby is young player for extension and he will certainly not look to have his minutes cut for another 20+ minutes big. Rolo is also for extension and he will certainly by his standards not look to have his minutes cut or starter role taken from him. There is no enough minutes for Wendell even from the bench to get minutes and show what he can do beside those garbage minutes Felicio did.
Bulls need to get rid of Lopez if you want to see Wendell on the floor this year. My guess is you wont see Wendell till February without injuries or incidents like last year. Lauri was lucky. Just remember if there wasnt for that punch we still wouldnt know nothing about Lauri's talent going into this summer. Just imagine how pissed this board would be if this team was going into this year with Lauri getting 3rd string minutes, Lavine sucking and Dunn sucking. And that's your "big 3". And then drafted another big which will get 3rd stringed into his rookie year. All because of vets like Mirotic and Rolo. Guys who have no future with this franchise. We would be Orlando Magic.

No thanks on Lance, Hood or Doug. God no on Doug.
Mario is an interesting name if you get him at a good price. There is upside there.

I doubt our FO will be active enough to get a trade for Rolo. It was a pretty dire situation last season between Portis and Niko and we still ran them together in lineups for weeks. The silver lining is that Rolo doesn't mind being benched and he seems to be a very positive influence on the young guys.

A crazy-eyed tag team of Lance and Portis would be flat-out amazing. They'd literally try to out-flex each other.

The Cavs just extended the qualifying offer to Rodney Hood. I'm not too sure how useful it would be to try and outbid the Cavs, even if they have no idea what they are doing.

Rolo will have to be benched for WCJ to get burn. Rolo is untradeable, even as an expiring, in today’s NBA.

I don't think you are going to get any more than a second rounder for him at the deadline, but I could imagine a trade like that to a team needing some bigman depth and wanting a high character guy for a playoff run.

There's absolutely no such thing as an untradable expiring contract. The bigger the expiring, the better. It means the team receiving said player/contract can likely ship out an equally big/bad/longer albatross of a contract without needing to take additional players back in the trade.bad knees wrote:

In addition to that, Lopez is a serviceable bench player on any team in the league. Despite the leagues transition to small ball and versatility, there are not 60 centers in the NBA better than Lopez.
The Almighty Golden State Warriors starting Centers for the past 4 seasons have been Zaza Pachulia/Andrew Bogut. Pretty much the only criteria the Warriors look for in a C: Set good screens, hustle, play dirty. Lopez fits the bill and would absolutely get minutes even for the Dubs.

I agree on both counts. The inside out game is extinct in the NBA. Overall, I don't feel like Embiid is ever going to make a profound mark in his career, nor Ayton reaching his ceiling. Guys like KAT look like borderline net negatives. And honestly, watching them at their best, in mixes, is actually tremendously exciting.
I was hoping for a wing with the Bulls pick to be honest, even though WCJ seems to have some major polish and upside; wings just seem more valuable in today's NBA. Now---because the game has changed so much since Rolo got into the NBA, he had some games where he kinda feasted out of confusion. But he could never do that in the playoffs.
It used to be that having a great big man led to having a seriously competitive team. But that era is done. It's not like anybody now possesses Hakeem or Tim Duncan level skill and mind. You have a 6'7" guy in Draymond Green that shuts down your Embiids, Cousins, and Porzingises without breaking a sweat.
To me, Lauri is a great piece to have in the modern NBA as somebody with a dangerous shot and mobile as a slasher.

Of course Rolo can be traded if the Bulls are willing to take a crap contract back. But he’s making $14.3 M this year, and he’s not a modern NBA big. The going rate for someone like Lopez is $4-5 M. No way we are trading him for a future pick, even a second rounder. Especially not to GS, a team with severe cap issues. No way they are paying repeater tax on Lopez’s salary. All the C’s they had last year were on league minimums or close to it.
I expect the Bulls will try to trade Rolo through the trade deadline, and when they are unsuccessful, they will waive him so WCJ has a clear path to playing time for the last two months of the season.
