He has nothing to wait really. He needs to take advantage of his QB on a rookie deal. He wasted already one year. If he doesnt go for big names who fit a team in terms of improvement he can start packing his things in a office. I want to see him active on both free agency and trade deals. We need to be one of most active team on a market this summer. We won 5 games for god sake. You cannot go into year expecting that everything was coach fault and none of yours.

While I am happy Eberflus is gone, Bears being bad this season is 50-50 fault between fired guy and one staying in a office hiring new coach.

This guy threw down the authority like a ton of bricks. So much for the leadership question right out of the gate.

In what interview did Johnson say that about DJ ? I've watched quite a few interviews and never caught that comment.

Is it weird how many interviews Johnson is doing. I can’t really recall a newly hired HC do the round for a national media tour. I think he was on first take this morning. I also somewhat felt the same about poles and how much more front and center he has been (before the losing streak) as opposed to other bears personnel. I wonder if Warren made a conscious decision to put these guys in front of the media more

Idk. I’d like to think that it has to do with the fact that the Bears did something that went outside of the narrative, which was getting the hottest coach of the cycle literally a day after he (officially) hit the market.

With that said, this is kinda what the media does. They are giving Poles all kinds of props now. But on the backend, they’re waiting for the fail. That’s why I continue to maintain that Poles just needs to stay focused and not get caught up in the hype. There’s way too much work still to be done and the only way to get it done is off camera…not on it.

I’ve heard a few as well. I’ve also searched for this but can’t seem to find it. So I’d be interested in knowing as well.

It sounds like the Bears did a good job of selling Johnson on their organization:

“That was really important to me,” he said. “(I wanted) to see that the structure setup was conducive to winning. All those questions were answered throughout the interview process. With George, Kevin, Ryan, I believe in them and I really believe we will be able to turn this place around.”

As far as his connection with Poles, Johnson explained exactly what he was seeking in terms of a shared vision with his new boss. His wishes had nothing to do with authority over the roster or undisputed final say on big decisions.

“I like to think I’m a low-ego guy, low-maintenance guy,” Johnson said. “That whole control factor? I don’t need that. I just need somebody who I can trust.

“In the past, where I’ve seen it not work and where there’s been dysfunction, there has been an element of disconnect between the GM, the head coach, other executives. Quite frankly, I did not feel that here.”

Might have been M&H. Cowherd? Can’t remember right now. I also watched Breakfast Ball and Florio. Not sure

It seems a little weird to make that comment. Why stir up the past, and possibly alienate one of your star players? Johnson wasn't here, he doesn't know the full context. Just seems like a needless thing to say. Better would just be to say "I don't know the particulars of that incident, so don't want to comment on that now."

He eased into it a little. He was asked if he saw that play iirc. Said we’re going to get everybody on the same page on standards and such. Then he added that sentence and it kind of threw my eyebrows back. But you know, new coaches like to take on team leaders sometimes to make an example of. I remember when Jaylon Johnson was dropped to second team defense by Eberflus.

I hadn’t seen that. Thanks for providing.

Just from a contextual standpoint, I’m good with that 100%. It’s never too early to set the tone with regards to what the expectations are going to be. A+ job not only setting the tone, but also making sure to reiterate that last year was last year and it’s about looking ahead. I’m sure DJ (and all of the other players) should be able to appreciate that.

I'd love to hear what he had to say about Tyrique Stevenson jawing with fans while play was going on...

I would assume that his position would probably be the same. Guys will have a chance to start out with a clean slate (with him at least….don’t think the fans will ever forget that). But Stevenson is a solid player. He’s had his roller coaster moments. But talent/contract, I think he’ll be seen as a young guy that just has some growing up to do.

Man Stevenson looked just god awful to me last year. Every time I remember him in a play it was for a bad reason. It got to the point that when I saw someone miss a tackle or make a bad read and got beat, I'd say "I bet it was Stevenson" then look, it almost always was.

Granted, I'm not trying to present myself as some defensive guru, so maybe he was great in some other ways, but boy was he in the middle of a lot of mistakes.

It's true. He's a tough nosed player and a ballhawk, but he gets picked on a ton and teams usually have a ton of success against him. I'd have to think he's either just not that skilled, or he's making a bunch of small mental mistakes.

I'd be surprised if they didn't bring in someone to compete for that spot this year.

IIRC, Terell Smith has much better advanced numbers. Matching the eye test.
