http://bleacherreport.com/articles/2120206-should-lakers-fans-get-their-hopes-up-about-carmelo-anthony

A well written overview of the current situation that gives things a much needed injection of realism, for better or for worse. As suggested in the article, I still believe the race comes down to the Knicks and the Bulls as it has always done. I don't see that anything has ultimately changed in the last few days, Twitter diarrhoea and Hollywood movie pitches aside.

That said, I think it is safe to say that if Melo does end up a Laker he might be best served using that newly minted max contract by looking up the best psychiatrist in LA. That kid be

Oh, and Hi everyone! :D

Welcome buddy, we got a decent aussie/kiwi contingent here, so make yourself right at home. Always good to have a reminder of the great Chicago Bulls' international brand.

Too bad you didn't wait a few hours, could have used your first post to express how excited you were to have Carmelo coming to the bulls.

Missed opportunity.

I'm really looking forward to the season either way, Melo or no Melo.
With Derrick back and the healthiest he has been in over two years, McBuckets, Taj in the starting 5, possibly Mirotic signing as well...

Should be fun!

Well one day before Melo said he would announce. Someone has tome up with a scoop right? Where the hell is SAS?

A nice injection of reliable info from our posters with sources would be nice :)

You're right, what a way for me to start! I just hope it does turn out to be a missed opportunity.

And for the sake of honesty, I am actually from England. Moved to Auckland few years ago so am claiming "kiwi" as an honouree title :D

We'll he is back tomorrow from vacation for First Take return. By that time Anthony would probably be signed, but Iam sure he will be all over Lebron

I could use a little SAS. In these troubled times, who would have thought that Steven A would be the voice of reason?

Thats lame! SAS dont have twitter? Dafug decade is he living in

As it stands now I have to think Melo is favoring the Bulls. Based on everything we learned yesterday:

-LA is being leveraged
-The Bulls have 2 offers on the table for Melo: with and without Taj
-NY is offering the max and basically nothing else

Unguaranteeds + MDJ + Snell + Randolph + Capspace is about 20.6.

Subtract 100k (the amount we can't go over the cap), and you arrive at 20.5 as the amount we can offer Melo via S&T.

We can even add Kirk via S&T. This can get us to Melo's MAX starting amount.

We don't have an MLE to get Mirotic in this scenario, but we use Mirotic's rights, along with other assets (picks) to seal the deal and get Phil to agree instead of losing Melo for nothing to LA. Oh, and we keep Taj in this scenario.

DONE.

I am not sure how many times the calculations need to be posted, except for adding a S&T outgoing option...

I don't know what any of that means (no offense, just too excited right now), but HE has spoken.

How to get Melo at 20.5M, keep Taj, and get Mirotic.

THE HOLY GRAIL.
viewtopic.php?p=40412390#p40412390

The numbers you quoted did not make any sense. The players could not all be combined, so could only bring back about $13.3M. Even it were legal, it only gets you about $16M, so I gave you all the information you needed to be able to do the calculations yourself. Deeks did a different example, where Melo would get $20M, versus my max, and included Smith in the trade, so have a smaller outgoing S&T value, but I included enough information for you to use any legal assumptions, and make the calculations.

Dumping all the exceptions, Dunleavy, Butler, Randolph, Snell, and the non-guaranteed guys, and getting a letter that Mirotic will not come over this season, plus the 7 holds adds to $46.3M, opening up $16.9M

The Bulls can take back the larger of that number, or outgoing salaries time 150% plus $100K, or $5M, depending if the outgoing salaries are over $9.8M.

So you have to see if you can find enough salaries to make that number greater than $16.9M.

Dunleavy, Butler, Snell, the 3 non-guaranteed guys, add to $10.9M ($8.9M without Butler), Randolph can not be included, unless they finish the trade under the cap, and McDermott, and Mirotic counts as $0 in trade. At $10.9M ($8.9M without Butler), you use $5M, instead of 150%, so they would be able to take back a maximum of $15.9M ($13.3M without Butler), which is still less than $16.9M.

The most the Bulls could pay Melo, without Boozer being included in the S&T, while keeping Rose, Noah, Gibson, Smith, and McDermott, is $16.9M. If you also dump Smith, and McDermott, you can get that to $18.7M, as long as you are willing to roll with Melo, Rose, Noah, Gibson, RMLE, and 8 minimum salary guys.

You could include a S&T Nazr, and Hinrich. The most either of those players could be signed for next season, is the average salary, ~$5.3M, since they only have Early Bird rights. In the keep the Rose, Noah, Butler, Gibson, Smith, and McDermott case, and bring back Melo at $22.4M, would require sending out $17.4M, so those players would have to be S&Ted, on 3-year deals, with the 1st year guaranteed, starting at $8.5M total. That could be reduced by including Butler, and/or Smith, and reducing Melo's salary, like in Deek's example.

Time to get back to optimism:

#MelotoChicago it is gonna happen book it! Don't listen to other fanbases, we are the best, we have the best team, we offer the best supporting cast with or without Derrick Rose and we have the best jerseys and the best color scheme and have the newest training facility in a month. Nike Jordan has the perfect opportunity with Melo to sneak into the Adidas market of Derrick Rose and Joakim Noah.
And don't forget, we have the best coach not named Popovich!
And we have Larsa Pippen for LaLa.
