I think the best-case scenario for everyone associated with the bears, from FO to fans, is for Pace to pull use every trick in the book to win a Superbowl this year. I think the only chance the bears have to win the super bowl in the next five years is if they get the QB, keep the defense in tact, and upgrade so things on offense. That sounds impossible but I think its do as long as ownership is willing to pay out a lot of money this offseason. Here are the steps I think Pace needs to take
1. Convert as many contracts into signing bonuses as possible. Not being an expert on the cap, Im not sure if there are any restrictions or limits to how much we can do but since im just a fan ill assume we can have as many signing bonuses as we want but I'll still try to keep it realistic. One thing that might happen is that the cap hit would be spread out in the remaining years of a player's contract but I think that's a different type of restructuring. Either way, I think its worth the loss of flexibility in cap for the next 2-3 years to get it this year. Players to target for contract conversion and how much we should save; Mack (6.6m), Quinn (5m), Jackson (3), Fuller (5m), Hicks (5m), and Graham (6m).
2. We do the trade for Watson or Wilson. It seems like we'll get whoever says yes first and that'll probably the Seahawks. I saw a tweet from on of the spotrac guys mentioning Watson restructures his contract to 2.9m after a trade to the saints so I'm going to assume the bears and wilson can do the same thing. So for the 2021 season the cap hit will be 2.9m from wilson. The package for Wilson would ideally be Foles, Miller, three 1st a second and later picks. After that we'd have about 20m in cap
3. With that 20m we resign some of our better backups to very friendly deals. I think FOs will have the negotiating leverage this offseason since there are going to be a lot of players on the market and the cap is low. I think a lot of guys will sign smaller contracts than they usually would or sign one year deals.
4. I think we have some really good trade value with James Daniels. There are a lot of good Gs on the market but they're a little older. For the right piece I would trade daniels and sign one of the FA Gs. My targets would be as follows: 1. Daniels for Brown jr. Ravens most likely say no and I wouldn't give up any more picks so on to the next. After being turned down by the ravens I try and get either a WR or pass rusher. Third option would be a 2nd or high 3rd. I think since the Giants just released their pro-bowl caliber gaurd they'd be open to trading for Daniels and I would want Darius Slayton in return.
5. Time to sign some FAs. I'd sign Rieff, Wagner, Neal, and Kirkpatrick. If we can get him for cheap, Aldon smith as well.
So we go into the season a favorites to win the superbowl but there are downsides for the future. We lose cap flexibility for the next 2-3 seasons. Probably have to let at least fuller, hicks, and Robinson walk. and We dont have 1 round picks for three years. However, we'd still have a great core on defense in Mack, SMith, Jackson, Johnson, and Goldman. Plus with Wilson, mooney, slayton, and kmet we'd have a really good to great offense.
