also like, even if fields pans out, a guy at risk of losing his job because he repeatedly mismanaged the QB position doesn’t really deserve a bunch of credit for going “hell i guess i’ll trade up and pick the consensus best qb prospect”
justin fields is not some diamond in the rough that ryan pace uncovered

Pretty sure the Giants were talking to any number of teams. Pace outbid them because he had to. Any GM in a desperate Pace’s position (of his own making) would have traded up for Fields once Fields dropped. That was a no brainer if there ever was one. Funny if his QB failures have finally led him to success, but he is clearly shooting in the dark.

Let's be fair about this- you can't discount the good moves he makes by saying "it was the obvious thing to do, anyone would have done it", and then blame him for moves he made that didn't pan out (Trubisky).

I didn’t discount it. I just said it was obvious (read imperative) due to the piss poor situation Pace created already.

that is discounting it- you're basically saying it didn't take any foresight or intelligence to do what he did to move up to grab Fields.

FYI - They just said that Justin Fields will be on ESPN 1000 AM sometime between 2:00 - 3:00PM today
like for a good 1/2 hour or more just talking with Waddle and Silvy.
and they have their regular "Jay Cutler show" at 3:00 still scheduled too
maybe some cross talk between them?
excited to just hear Justin talk about maybe not all football.
I really fell in love with the way he handled that game Monday.
Never too up or down, always seemed calm and ready to go back out there and keep trying.
So lame the refs stole his MNF road win from us on that dumb flag.
We won that game, it doesn't matter what the final score was.

He's going to be on the Spiegel and Parkins show as well. Wonder who nabs him for a weekly show, S&P are younger and IMO 670 has been clearly his biggest fans from day 1 (that Lawerence Holmes show the day after the draft was so good).

It wasn't obvious, hell we still got dice over here saying Mac Jones is the better pick. Being better in week 1 does not mean you're a better prospect.
You had NYJ, SF, Atlanta, Miami, Detroit, Carolina, Denver, Philly and the Giants all passed on him. Each one of those teams would have benefited from drafting him because he's a better prospect than Zach Wilson, Trey Lance, Matt Ryan's final years, Tua, Goff, Darnold, Teddy, Hurts and Daniel Jones.
If the Bears ownership looked at Pace last offseason and didn't fire him, how are they going to look at him THIS offseason with that freaking kid doing what he's doing and think, yeah we're going in another direction. Like it or not, it just doesn't make sense. You don't fire a GM after enabling him to trade up and draft a franchise QB.

Re: Bears talk 2.0; Fields era begins for real for real
The Bears ownership looked at Pace last offseason and mandated that he fix the quarterback position. If you don’t think it was obvious he was gonna move up for any of the top 5 if at all possible, I don’t know what else to tell you.

1) i never said that. you're hearing what you want to hear
2) we're not 1 week in
i would have done the same thing pace did. because (potential) franchise QBs are very valuable and because one dropped into the range where i would have been able to trade up to get him
let's be honest here. pace was NOT allowed to pull another trubisky, giving up the kind of draft capital to go up further and ensure that nobody scooped up all the top QB prospects earlier. he got lucky that fields fell as far as he did and made the obvious move both from a team-building perspective and a career saving perspective. and he shouldn't have been given the opportunity to do so

Pace is 100% garbage, should have been fired long ago. One draft pick doesn’t unseat 6-7 yrs of failure at his job.
Outside of Fields and Roquan whose the good player on the bears? The whole roster is garbage and overrated.

if i had unlimited time i'd do a study on how long it generally takes to revamp a 5-11 team (like pace inherited). but my instinct is to throw out the first season results. since then his record as a GM is 39-50. he has clearly been a good drafter beyond the early rounds, although i'm not sure why a guy would only not be good in early rounds. so i'd just lump it all together and say he's been decent in the draft. and even if you think he's been good, it begs the question why he would have traded so many of the assets he's wielded somewhat effectively

Re: Bears talk 2.0; Fields era begins for real for real
I’m legit hopeful for our future solely due to Fields. He’s starting to get it.
What do we need to see from him and the offense the rest of the way to make us believe we can win the north next year with Rodgers out?
We legit should have won Steelers and Niners games. I think Fields gets hot and we make a run to get to 8-9. Miss playoffs and Nagy gets canned.
Getting rid of all the deadweight on the roster and a whole summer of Fields throwing to Mooney and Kmet will help. Pace will need to draft a stud WR and we will need to sign one too Arob ain’t it.

oof. good luck acquiring a better WR than robinson. but if fields ain't gonna throw him the ball a lot might as well go the cheaper route

I guarantee no picks from Fields today and that the Bears won't lose.

Re: Bears talk 2.0; Fields era begins for real for real
With the tough cap situation we are heading into I think we should make a big splash on defense. We are two or three pieces away on defense from being that 2018 defense in my opinion. At the very least we will have a top running game and a very above average QB. That with a top 5 defense is a recipe for success. I think on defense we need a legit corner opposite of Johnson and a new safety. We could bring back Fuller but I think its more likely we can afford Bryce Callahan. I want to bring in Mathieu at safety. Bringing in Calias
Campbell at DE for about 3m I think would be a huge benefit as well.
Offensively, I think Robinson is gone. Mooney might be a legit number one. At the very least, he's a threat in a "WR by committee" type of pass game. We can always draft a WR in the second. Olave out of Ohio st would be awesome but unlikely. Gallup could be a really cheap guy who out plays his contract. On the oline, we have Jenkins and we could draft a RT but Borrom has a chance to prove himself. I think we should let Daniels walk and sign a older G like Osemele or Castro. They're better anyway and that'll save us probably at least 7/8 mil to fill out the roster.
Coaching I want Fangio back as DC and as HC/player caller I want Harabough, Bills OC, or Joe Brady in that order.
Campbell/Goldman/Hicks
Mack/Smith/Trevathan/Quinn
Callahan/Jackson/Mathieu/Johnson
Fields
Monty/Herbert/Cohen
Kmet/Mooney/Gallup/2nd rounder
Teven/Whitehair/Mustiphar/Decastro/Borrom
Fangio and Harabough
I think we have a great chance of winning the division even if Rodgers is still a packer

I wouldn’t be surprised if we cut Goldman assuming there isn’t a huge penalty for doing so. There was a lot of uncertainty about him playing this season and that might continue and he just hasn’t been at the level we’re used too. On top of that Tonga has been great in his role and will only get better

I don’t know the length of his deal, but there is already a lot of dead money going forward, and cutting Goldman would take it to even more insane levels of cap spending with little return. Not that the situation may not come to that if Goldman punts on his career. Oye. The only path right now is to temporarily re-stock the roster with guys on first contracts and minimal salaries. Its going to be a challenge, especially with trader-up guy. And instead of moving quickly forward along with Justin, the Bears may have to tread water for awhile. But yeah, Goldman. And Hicks. A-Rob. Nichols? Basically any Bear or prospective incoming Bear that wants a (sizeable) new deal right now may be SOL. I suspect the most they can possibly do is Roquan. Whitehair wants a deal, but very unlikely atm. Perhaps the Bears will draft Whitehair’s replacement early in this next draft. Bilal maaaybe, but then the Bears are on rice and beans.
