Maybe the silver lining would be that it was done 'informally' allowing some time for knicks to line up solutions and rethink.

Jedi mind trick. Phil knows Melo is gone so he won't look bad if he offers Melo the max and Melo leaves. You see, the Knicks are lucky if Melo stays and they are lucky if Melo leaves.

This is true. Offering the max allows Phil to walk away unscathed - all while doing what he wanted to do, which is to reboot the franchise.

Oh, wise ones. Good point.

Moment of truth, Melo.

This is why I see him choosing us over NY.

Knicks fan here (in peace)

Is going to play in Chicago a championship for sure? Let's see, Rose is coming off of three knee surgeries and the Bulls owner is known to be frugal.(see stoudemire)

Do you honestly think he would leave AT LEAST 40 million on the table for a CHANCE to win a championship? After next year his odds would be just as good in NY. Could any of us leave that type of money on the table?

This is what the Knicks would look like next summer assuming they sign Melo at max with a 67 million cap.

"lots of variables"

on this board, the other teams have the variables, but our two knees operated superstar is not a variable..? Our coach and GM who hate each other? Noah with his knee history?

Knicks could be better than us in a year. Probably low chances, but there is some chance of it. We can't guarantee the Knicks are going to be horrible and we're going to be amazing.

Have to be honest - I think New York's situation is less dim than this board assumes. Not great of course, but we're talking about the East. NY could be a middle playoff seed next year, maybe even third. They are always players in free agency because of their town, and while Melo is older...in his brain he is still firmly in that prime, so he doesnt see the end as being near necessarily.

He take motivation from others saying that about him right now.

Exactly. Even if he gets the max there will be cap space next season. Most of the losses this year came because of Felton's fat ass and Woodson. They're both gone so I see the Knicks being a playoff team this year.

The one thing to not overlook is this and it is minor, Melo has zero percent of being compared to Jordan. Jordan's house is a compliment to him to win in where the Mecca they eat them up and spit them out. Patrick Ewing though does have snickers.

Melo knows who he will be playing with here: 1 DPOY, 1 former COY, 1 former MVP. In NY, there are no guarantees as to who is on that roster.

Now if the Knicks actually offer Melo the 'Super Max' over 5 years... doesn't that completely screw over their rebuilding process?

Also - If Melo is indeed out to dinner right now with the Bulls as reported by KC - it looks promising, don't you think?

Sorta. The trading of Chandler hurt a bit but they have two huge contracts coming off the books still. Boozer might make a third and Phil can go into full rebuild mode.

Two? Amare and who? Also I think by your response you thought I meant sign and trade with Melo to the Bulls since you included Booz in the mix... I meant if Melo stays in NY and signs for 130 over 5 years, that will really hurt their rebuilding process. If I was the Knicks - I honestly wouldn't want Melo because I would prefer the cap space and to make a full rebuild. Its going to take a long time to right that ship.

It will take at least 2 years for Knicks to contend even with Melo. They couldn't even make it to the playoffs this year when the east is super weak. Next year it will be even harder because now you have so many up and coming teams looking to get in the playoffs all of which are better than NY.

Rose had 2 knee surgeries and still has cartilage in his knee.

So the Knicks, one year away from being able to clear the decks and properly rebuild, are offering the largest guaranteed contract in the history of the league to a 30 year old player who didn't even make 3rd team all-NBA last year?

Makes sense.

So if Melo does sign that superman contract with the Knicks, how much cap space would the Knicks have next year?

every loser team has scapegoats, the knicks all around sucked outside of melo and some flashes from hardaway. i remember when woodson first got there and how nicks fans were happy to "finally" have a coach. Now you have a rookie coach and president, even thibs had growing pains his first few years in the big seat.

assuming no lebron, who are you getting in 2015 to make a difference?

Top 2015 free agents:

Rondo
Marc Gasol
Aldridge
Love

Who are the Knicks assured of getting next year?

All of those guys may not even make it to free agency.
