The 2001 game where the East won by a point at the end was insane. The East was viewed as inferior even more so than in recent years, and when the East won they acted like they just won the title. Guys were mobbing each other in celebration and the West looked amazingly dejected.
I wish we could bring that back into the all-star game, it was so compelling.
Well, I think your 3-5 best players define a generation. Back then you had Kobe, Shaq, Garnett, Duncan, Iverson. Competitive sharks/killers. I don't think you were gonna hit the all-star game and disrespect them by not bringing a strong effort; they'd just make you look bad.
Lebron has the been the best player, but he was never the killer that MJ, Kobe, Garnett, etc. and he's been sheltered by fixing up multiple all-stars and deep rosters for most of the decade. Curry is a shooter who was kind of sheltered away from the "dirty work." Durant got injured then joined the best regular season team of all-time. Kawhi has that killer instinct; he's also faced injuries, so he load manages his way through most the season. Rose got injured beyond repair (had to re-invent his game and role).
If the top-5 played like Westbrook and Dray, we'd have more of a late 90s/early 00s vibe - those guys brought the fire but not the elite (Lebron/Durant level) skills. Unless I'm forgetting somebody, the top guys this past decade all either "had it easy" (relatively speaking) or couldn't compete in their primes due to injury (which stinks - Rose was great to watch).
We're starting a new era here. Love what i see from Giannis. I like what I see from Zion, Luka, Embiid - they'll be interesting to watch if they develop into the top-5 circle. If those guys all stay healthy, they have that old-school competitive edge IMO.
