Re: 2018 Draft Thread #6
There’s a lot of angst around here because there’s a rough consensus about a talent drop-off at 7 and we’re looking like we’ll be picking 8 or 9. I’m there too but we’re forgetting that every year there are one or two guys who end up getting picked way higher than they’re mocked at this point of the season.
It’s March, think about May when it shifts from game scouting to the combine and private workouts. There’s always somebody who has killer combine numbers or shows “nuclear athleticism” in workouts and some GM gets drunk on the TUP and reaches. I’m looking at Kevin Knox, Miles Bridges and Zhaire Smith this year. Without lottery luck we’re probably not getting Ayton, Doncic or Bagley but after that it wouldn’t shock me if any of the other top 7 fall to us.

I continue to say how I want no part of Kentucky players this year, especially Knox. His game today was a series of floaters over shorter players and mid range jumpers that were available due to down screens. Neither of those shots will be available in the NBA.
KC: Do you still think you're a championship-caliber team?
Gar: I never said that and correct me if I'm wrong

I still believe in Kevin Knox and his potential. And for me it's always been more about his assertiveness than his skill.

We him completely differently. I love his potential as an off ball scorer. Knows how to get himself often, work off screens. And those floaters won't be available? How? He can get himself into the lane and use his size/length.
I'm most concerned about his ball skills. Can he create for himself? But off ball, he's smooth and it's where he looks most comfortable.

SG is far from a position of need but if Smith is available with our Pels pick you have to look long and hard at it.

Thought Trae Young had a good finish to his career too. Kid literally has no help offensively. And brought his team back late. In an uptempo, high variance offense I think he could be a stud.

Alexander getting drafted ahead of Knox is something I fully expect, at this point.

To work off screens and get open mid range jumpers, you need both elite quickness and an elite shot to even have a chance at that in the NBA. Rip Hamilton, JJ Reddick, Kyle Korver. That won't work for Knox, who has neither. It's one of he reasons that shot is phased out, the other reason being it isn't a good shot statistically.
The floaters were over Davidson guys that had half his length. He couldn't beat anyone off the dribble, and couldn't get to the rim against a slow, unathletic unit. Lots of red flags for me.

But he's hit those floaters all year long. It's the great equalized against length.Chicago-Bull-E wrote:bennjuiced34 wrote:Chicago-Bull-E wrote:I continue to say how I want no part of Kentucky players this year, especially Knox. Knox is adept at getting himself open off the ball. Screens, curls, pops. That translates. And since he's so tall, he can get his shot off.

Re: 2018 Draft Thread #6
Knox was specifically told by Calipari to shoot less and score more in the mid-range/near the basket.
Similarly, Calipari told KAT to stop shooting 3s and post up more.
College coaches don't really care what works better in the NBA, they're only looking for short term wins while these 1 & done's are briefly there for them.

Off ball screens for very large wings does not translate. Creating your own shot does, elite ballhandling, quickness, translate. Where are all these wings working off the ball in the NBA, making allstar teams and producing?

Every single team in the league is running sets where off ball players are coming off of rip screens, curls, UCLA cuts, hammers, etc. Every single one. Shot creation is an important skill but you don’t watch basketball the right way if you don’t see the other stuff happening nearly every possession.

Can we just not try to talk ourselves into Kevin Knox as a good prospect?
Too depressing to bear.

NBA scouts are turning on Oklahoma's Trae Young, whose historic freshman season ended with an 83-78 overtime loss to Rhode Island in the NCAA tournament.

"I would not take him in the lottery," one scout responded after the game.
"Not a fan," replied an Eastern Conference executive. "Love his passion and dedication, but he must learn to be more efficient."
"I don't see it with him," said an executive from the Western Conference. "He's erratic with the ball, and he's a teaser. Volume shooter. I have concerns on him."
"As he matures, he's going to have to balance out his impulsive play, because while that's flashy and all of us love to see it when he's hot, it's not going to take you very far as a team," added another scout. "Defensively, he has to be better, plain and simple."
"I believe he had only had one such game, versus Kansas, that was a winning effort," said the first executive.
"I believe only 15.0 percent of his field-goal attempts are in the mid-range," said the executive, who pointed out the need to be able to stop and pop inside the arc. "Can he get his shot off versus quality defense?"

Deandre Ayton wants nothing to do with a bunch of 6’7 wings with no NBA skills.

Ayton is helpless against a run and gun 3 point shooting team. He's been irrelevant in this 2nd half.
