I'm sure they did. But you had Taj sitting there on the pitch so I don't think the cap space move was ever going to be an option after that.

Besides, there's full cap space and there's near full cap space options.

Here is a team where the Bulls give up Boozer, nonguaranteeds and 4 future 1sts for Melo
Rose / DJ (part of MLE)
Butler / Dunleavey
Melo / McDermott
Taj / Mirotic (part of MLE)
Noah
+ 4 vet min contracts / scrubs

See the difference?

The difference is I think you have your numbers wrong. There's a thread open that explains how we can give Melo $20m and still keep Taj, Butler and sign Mirotic. Yet somehow in your scenario we'd have to strip the entire team to give Melo the extra $2m in year one and end up with just McDermott on the bench. Granted I'm not a cap guru and my math might be off here, but please explain.

Well, I'll start off this way, Mirotic has a $3M buyout. If he takes the room exception ($2.5M per year), he is going to be playing for very little money. Its going to take more than that. Maybe not much more, but more.

I'll do the math myself now. Capspace scenario.
Rose $18.8
Noah $12.7
Butler $2M
McDermott $2M
7 vet mins $3.5M

Total = $39

Caproom = $24M
So, yeah. If you can get Melo to take two million less to start you will have enough room to add another player.

U think mirotic doesnt have money? the buyout has already been paid probably with his own money he has saved over the years. The bulls can give him 600,000 k if they want to supplement it but i wouldnt be surprised if thats what happened, he just paid it himself. This years salary can go straight into his pocket if that what he wants. The bulls could actually pay more of the buyout if they wanted it would just go towards the cap.

Im still unsure about Lance over Melo tho. Lance bring the ballhandling that we need, but hes not a shooter and I think if we strike out on melo, we need more shooters on the team.

I disagree. I think that team might just contend in the East.

And after reading Ralph's posts yesterday, I got the impression that the Bulls did propose Melo the non-Taj option. We all agree the sign and trade is better if you can pull it off.

One question to ask, though, is do we like this team better than the team as it is constituted right now? It's basically down Taj and some depth and with Melo. I say you have to take this team over what you have now. Only the issue of what to be done with Mirotic confuses the issue for me.

As to whether Melo likes enough, in the case that a sign and trade can't be done, well, that's up to him.

I hope we can just all agree that the Bulls probably ran the capspace scenario by Melo. I just understand why it wasn't their primary pitch because the other scenarios create ridiculously good teams.

Do we like that team better than what we have now? Yeah. However, if the Bulls could sign Stephenson for $10M to start and dump some stuff you would have a similar version to the S&T team.

Rose / DJ
Lance / Snell / Hinrich
Butler / McDermott
Gibson / Mirotic
Noah / Smith

I personally like that team better than the Melo for capspace route.

I think either Melo team (cap space or sign & trade) or the Lance team is an upgrade. I put together the same Lance team in a post in the thread that I made about shooting guards yesterday:

35% on over 200 attempts, plus Derrick was much improved on his 3pt shot before the injury. It's not like these guys are non-threats shooting the ball and you can guard them at the free throw line.

Mirotic could buy out his contract in installments, which I'm guessing is what he did. So he's still going to owe them for two years.

Come on. It's a damn S&T and he could sign right away with the Lakers. Give them the Sac Pick and the Bulls 2015 1st.

They honestly don't even want Melo

They just don't wanna lose

They keep saying we won 37 games with him completely disregarding the 54 wins the year before

With John Lucas III currently in Utah, and them being potentially involved in any 3 team deal, we might manage to get him back. Not sure whether we'd still go after Mike James though.

I'd want them to take back JR and give up MCD too. We'll add in Prigs.
