In the NBA where average careers are probably 5 years or less...Gasol was a second option 5 years back. I like Gasol and thinks he is a decent MLE level player at this stage(that is also more hope than reality). But, you don't pay for past championships ...you want hunger, future production. That's why the Brooklyn roster combining 1st options on championship teams lost.

Is Taj going to approach Gasol's heights? Definitely not. Fortunately, the Bulls FO is smart enough to know they need to have in-prime players(especially role players) if they want to win/contend.

The team is full of role players and one perpetually injured star. I thought this would be the off-season we finally got Rose some help. Lots of pressure on McDermott and Mirotic to live up to the hype now.

Phil going to LA is a sign of desperation, a late change of plans to try to undo what Chicago has done in terms of enticing Melo. If NY wanted to have the last meeting with Melo from the outset, it would have been included in Melo's announced itinerary.

Also, notice that Melo is not traveling to NY. The Knicks have to come to him.

The Bulls are still in this people. If GarPax truly did not discuss financials on Tuesday, then they had better get in there now with their plan.

I don't know if its desperation. Even if its a last minute change of plans, I bet Phil was always going to let it play out then come in and make his play to close the deal. We have no idea if it will work. But if Phil asks for a verbal committment today- one way or another its game over.

I do think since multiple teams have to make plans, the sooner it is resolved the better.

What really kills me here is how much sense this all makes. The only hurdle is the financial one, which can be mitigated a bit by lower taxes in Illinois and some creative signings and trades.

- Bulls have lusted after Gasol for a while now.
- Melo wants to play with Gasol
- Bulls are Melo's best chance to win in the short term

As much as I love Taj and really appreciate how he has stepped up his game while having to sit behind Boozer all these years, I can't help but think that a Rose/Butler?/Melo/Gasol/Noah lineup would look really nice - at least for a year or two. Obviously, if you can find a way to hang on to Mirotic and/or Butler in the process, that would be a plus.
