If we're acquiring Melo at his full max, then Gasol has to be acquired in a sign-and-trade too in order to get Mirotic at the MLE. We would not be under the cap and the MLE is not worth anywhere near $8 million.

Boozer can't be amnestied for all of the above to happen. It's either one giant sign-and-trade or two seperate sign-and-trades. There's a few different ways to do it player wise, but none of it would be through cap space.

Melo has informed the Knicks today that they are out of the running. He really like the direction of the organization with Phil, but he's just not comfortable with this years roster. Melo has NOT made a final decision on his new team yet, but Melo has a soft spot for the Knicks and thought he should let them know ASAP so they can go on about their off-season and make other plans.

From what I can gather, Melo's two top choices are Chicago and Houston. He's deciding between those two and will likely have a decision before the weekend is over. I asked 3 people where they thought Melo was going...2 of them said Chicago...1 said Houston. They also speculated Gasol's decision could make an impact on the final decision.

As we've heard from Woj and others, Gasol has multiple options right now so this could drag out a bit.

I'd rather keep Taj but if we need to make the money work, we could trade Boozer, Taj, MDJ, Snell, maybe a pick to the Lakers for Gasol on a 3/20 deal. That would clear some more cap room for Melo.

yeah same if taj is in the way of getting melo...and by trading him we can get melo and gasol back... thats a no brainer. and I was soooo looking foward to the duo of taj+noah starting

That makes no sense. Why would they trade Taj for Gasol if they're not getting Melo? Taj is still on the right side of 30, whereas Gasol is not.

The only way for any of it to happen, is for NY to agree to facilitate a deal. After that it is not complicated.

The Bulls supposedly have a deal where Utah would take Snell, and a 1st to absorb Boozer. That is enough outgoing salary to pay Melo the max. If LA also wanted to move Gasol, the Bulls could just put together a separate deal, even if it looked like a single deal, with Dunleavy, and the non-guaranteed guys, which would allow a salary of up to $11.2M. The Bulls could have both Gibson, and Gasol, in addition to Melo, at the max.

It is all up to NY, which is the far fetched part. LA would probably not even have to take Boozer, to make it work, if they did not want to.
