Re: K.C. Johnson new NBC Sports Chicago Bulls Insider
I like KC and will readily admit that a big part of it is that he tends to see things the way I do. He tries to see the bigger picture and avoids “hot takes” for the sake of drawing attention to him. His detractors dislike him for this reason...different strokes. He’s been a good balance to Cowley. I think Bulls coverage has benefited by having both of them.
Bulls management trusts Johnson. This is clearly a two-edged sword, because maintaining this trust opens Johnson to criticism. Still, if you listen/read him carefully, he gives you a better idea of where management is coming from than anyone else out there. I find value in this.

Until the actual truth is more important to you than what you believe, you will never recognize the truth.

Can't recall who said this: "Journalism is printing something someone else doesn't want printed. Everything else is public relations". George Orwell, maybe?
From the basketball's perspective, travel is a nice pause from being pounded to the floor.

I remembered that like that as well, but it seems it isn't clear it was really him.
Here you find a discussion about who really said that.

My favorite was when he wrote an article saying Deng will not be traded and then he was traded like 2 days later.

I dont because this FO doesnt deserves current job. And KC as reporter has DUTY to report truth and publish facts and not stay silent on "negative" news. Reporter should be objective one who doesnt work for management. Which is something KC has tendecy to do. Which makes him lower than black under my nail as reporter.
If he worked as PR for Bulls then yeah. He would be doing his job.

There’s a great value to someone like KC who has direct access to the FO, and other reporters who have no access but are free to criticize like Cowley or Isola.
I don’t see how 1 person can be both. You look at the biggest successes like Zach Lowe and he is always ultra careful to protect his sources, the GMs and other FO personnel.
Case in point, last off season we had a negative story about the Bulls skipping the international NBA Global camp. As usual, the typical cheap rationale was attached. KC verbally said the reason the Bulls skipped was because their international scouting director Dukan is so high in the org he would have to miss our drafting process of domestic players like Wendell. They felt it was more important to have him focus on our #7 pick.
The idea that the Bulls org and Dukan doesnt value international players with his history of Kukoc, Mirotic, Gasol, etc is pretty off base. It’s akin to saying Golden State doesn’t value 3 point shooters.
It can be positive to criticize but it’s also important to let the defendant get their own viewpoint out as well. I remember all the furor about the return on Jimmy Butler and how we had the worst FO in the league. Meanwhile Zach Lowe asked around and quietly reported no GM who was even interested in Jimmy has anything better. He said the Bulls scoured the league and nothing else was close, Phoenix wasn’t even willing to part w the pick that became Josh Jackson. Was that Lowe protecting the Chicago FO or Lowe just reporting his due diligence on the matter?

I don't really agree with this view, but for the sake of argument, let's say it is true. You should be happy about his new role with NBC which anyone having it will generally have this profile anyway.

Now he actually works for the Reinsdorf's. He might actually get softer and worse, which is hard to do. Never been a fan of the job he does but he seems like a nice enough guy. Just never really been much of a "reporter". He sat on Paxson assaulting his head coach and that is really unacceptable regardless of the reasons.
