in retrospect, of course not. at the time, absolutely. maddux was coming off his first great season at age 26. age 22-25 he was good to very good. who would have guessed he would have NINE more elite seasons ahead of him?

i was one of them too. was a mets fan, though. tried to hang on as a fan after the exciting teams of the 80s fizzled and strawberry left. the strike was the final nail
