What options upgrade Tyrus Thomas while shedding the longterm salary of either Hinrich or Deng? I can only think of ones that are so much clearly better than Smith, they're not worth mentioning, because we'd just do those first.

It doesn't shed contracts, though. Smith's contract is worse than both of those.

I'm sorry, I meant to say replacing.

Do you want to trade, in theory, Tyrus and Deng for Josh Smith and Randolph Morris (or whoever)? Because that gives us a tiny upgrade at power forward, a huge downgrade at small forward, and a worse contract than the already bad one that we're giving out. I really don't want this.

There are other ways to upgrade the power forward spot, and there are other ways to save money. We've done them all to death, obviously, but they're still better.

There are better options, I'm just not sure they're really options. No Bosh, No Amare, No David West...I'd rather have Josh Smith than Tyrus and Deng. I think he's going to have a really good season next year, and we'll see if I'm right. Your mileage may vary.

Consider the trade kicker for a minute. If Josh Smith gets traded, his salary for the next four seasons becomes $12,600,000, $13,400,000, $14,200,000 and $15,000,000. This for a 16/7 guy with a bad attitude, no set position, career 46% shooting, the worst jumpshot in sports and middling defense. Is this really desirable?

I like Smith pretty well but shipping out the right players to create room for him and absorbing his contract with this trade kicker sounds like a headache.

This is all moot anyways because Josh Smith has a 6 million dollar trade kicker requiring any team that trade for him immediately pay him 6 million. There is NO WAY IN HELL that Reinsdorf pays $6 mil up front for Josh Smith. That's pretty much all that needs to be said

Stop talking about all his bad qualities, otherwise, his Dad will beat all of you up.

Pretty much with Sham on this one.

The cost of such a minor upgrade simply isn't worth it. We remove whatever little chance of 2010, take on a huge contract and risk not being able to move him later on.

Why would we want another athletic 4, who plays outside his ability, thinks of himself as a SF, has no outside shot, and is about to get paid $11M/year for the next 4 years. Oh, did I mention he's got poor basketball IQ.

No thanks!

You are't alone. There is no **** way I'd trade Deng for Smith.

And I say that as a statement that's more about Smith than it is about Deng. I don't want Smith anywhere near this roster.

I like the attitude Josh Smith brings to the Court...he is cocky (ex. open break away through the leg missed dunk) but when you have that athletic ability why not have a go at it. His attitude might be questionable, but we are no longer in the Scott Skiles era of hardnosed take your headband off or the highway coaching. Still, he is not the fit we need. JR isn't paying him $6 mil flat. Plus, his increase in salary over the next three years or so is too overvalued to bring him in when we already have TT basically bringing what he brings to the table. Try to get AMARE/BOSH this summer if not sit on your hands until 2010 plain and simple.

I'd rather sign Ron Artest and play him at the 4 than Josh Smith.

I think we could probably get 16 & 7 from a player who isn't functionally (Please Use More Appropriate Word) like Smith.

Smith's chemistry problems is the reason we should stick with what we have before investing into a guy like Josh Smith. Okafor before Smith, and Amare/Bosh/Boozer before Okafor. Smith is in our list #3.

I agree with Boogy with one exception.

I'd rather have Okafor than Boozer.

Taking on smith looks like that would take us out of the running for any big names in 2010.

Maybe deng for smith type?

I just don't think his production matches his hype or his paycheck (post trade kicker). He's a phenomenal athlete who has been given all the minutes and opportunity to develop as a player - but he is still nothing more than a phenomenal athlete.
